Straw/hay bale gardening

Has anybody tried straw/ haybale gardening?

We are going to try it next year and wondered if anybody here had experience with it and any tips or suggestions.

I am. I have a fall garden which popped up. Lettuce, spinach and carrots in one bale. I'll do more next year. My ground is rocky.

Slugs can climb the bales quite easily.

How do you prepare the haybales Stumphugger? We are thinking of getting the hay/straw bales this fall and letting them season over the winter. I was hoping the slugs might not like the scratchy hay that much.
