Kayak- Canoe building class

Postby oakinteriors1 » Thu Sep 04, 2014 2:13 am

For those who paddle, fish, etc...I posted this back in 2012 on the Ozark angler forum...
http://forums.ozarkanglers.com/topic/36 ... -workshop/

Well building my 11th Skin on Frame boat...Come on by and get involved...

After a little over a year, doing another one....My 11th Skin boat out of about 18 total boats I have built since 2006...
Another fishing boat, only this is for a 265 lb. person.....

I am tweaking the plans I used for mine, increasing the beam by 14% about 4'' from 27'' to 31''
Image
These Stitch and Glue plans have offsets for 5 forms...
The gunwale, I am moving, creating a tumblehome side..

This is what I have as of yesterday,,,,,,,,,,,,
This boat is for a friend who is in his 70's and has one of those 12' plastic Bass Pro tuperware boats....So I made up my mind to build him a real one. Even one he can take his little dog.....

Progress...Mapping out 2 forms in the 4' space for and aft of the center form is a challenge..
Image

I decided since he doesn't have a place to store it at home, but maybe in his store in his work area hoisted to the ceiling.....

I am making it like a canoe. Could even be a tandem if removable seats are incorporated....

Awesome... Enjoy the build. Way back when I was 17 I built a 16ft cedar strip prospector canoe. The build was done in my high school shop class. I still use that boat all the time. It's now going on 16 years old and still paddles great. Some day maybe I will build another...

We went to a local St. Park, a few weeks ago...At a spot across from a restroom and a fork in the road...Had tons of lookers, and plenty of conversations...Be interesting to set up a strong back and lash up a kayak while camping sometime, good interaction, a lot of local people camp at this park.....

With the boats on the roof, I can prop open the rear hatch high enough to get into all the cabinets, refrig. etc....

Kayak- Canoe building class

Postby dirtsailor2003 » Sat Sep 06, 2014 4:03 am

This is one of the reasons I want a teardrop trailer. I too build boats and we have two SOF kayaks, and a plywood lap strake kayak. Currently strap all of those on top of our 16' plywood lap strake Yankee Tender, and tow behind our Chevy crew cab with in bed camper.

That's all fine and dandy but it's a lot of rig with an extra boat to get into tight spots and down bumpy roads.

And this guy has a lot of free plans....http://yostwerks.com/

More skin boats here.....http://www.gentrycustomboats.com/New%20 ... plans.html

Both of mine are Dave Gentry's Chuckanuts. One is the 12', the other is the 15'. I built the 15 several years ago before Dave was selling the plans. I'm going to my boat shed later today and will snap a few shots of my boats.

Refurbishing my 8' pram, design unknown. Needs to sail ready in two weeks for a wood boat gathering that I host here in Oregon.

Beautiful kayaks I suppose I need to get started on mine sooner or later.

I really wish someone would design a SOF tandem sculling shell.

If you can find Stitch and Glue plans, they can be converted to a SOF..That is what I did to the Chesapeake 16..

The rudder assembly is removable..The way it works, you move the lever to the direction you want to turn..

I love the look of your boats, I just built and launched my latest boat this summer, https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set ... 864&type=1
how does SOF take rocky rivers?
Are SOF boats much lighter compared to plywood?

Oak, beautiful boats. I didn't know of this type of boat construction before seeing your topic yesterday. Spent my reading time last night googleing SOF boats, very interesting. Makes me want to include the frame profiles for a boat in my CNC cut trailer project.

Thanks, Mike

Skin boats are vulnerable along the stringers, rub strips can be applied to these areas, and use a 12oz ballistic Nylon fabric might take the abuse of a slow moving Ozark stream...These boats are light an average of 30 lbs. for a 16' kayak.....

Linseed oiled the frame....
Image

Going with the heavier stuff this time...
POLYESTER 11.6 oz. plain weave * 77" wide

This fabric is tough, you can pull the thread really tight and it doesn't separate the weave..
This time doing a different stitch, the double corded stitch.....
Image
Image
Image

What ever fabric is used, the hands get tired from pulling and tugging to get wrinkles out......
The bow end done, the whip stitch is down the front of the hull....

Image

This is as far as I got yesterday before my hands, neck, shoulders gave out, just have to finish up the stern and trim the inside of the gunnels...
