Fastest Builds

Postby fullon627 » Sun Sep 07, 2014 7:06 am

What are the ten fastest builds on this site? Sorry, ate a huge Rib eye steak and baked potato last night and preceded to go unconscious! I'm awoke at 3:00am from my meat and potato stupor. I do have other things to do this early in the morning, but I'm at the age. I don't what I want.

Here is my post dealing with which trailer I had on hand to use...Mid September 2013...
viewtopic.php?f=35&t=57336

Then I started my build post on Oct 31....
viewtopic.php?f=50&t=57906
Then on Dec. 20, I posted, moving the camper to my garage to continue later...
Then on June 16 posted again, restarted the project...
Then middle of July took it to get weighed...
By the end of July it went on two camping trips....
So what does that add up to? 5 months.....

You've got to qualify the fastest part. I was sleeping in mine a few nights a week, less than two months after I started it. However, it had no windows, no rear hatch, and no paint. (and that was with two weekends spent away out of state)
It was a whole year before I made a galley, galley hatch, second door, or real windows.

I'm thinking the x cubed has to be in there somewhere? It was pretty fast.

Fastest Builds

Postby Fyddler » Mon Sep 22, 2014 12:43 pm

Started the trailer frame of my 12' standy on 3/22/2013, camping on the road 7/1/2013. Still not "Finished". The first 3 weeks were taken up by the trailer frame because my welder uncle was sick, otherwise would have been a bit quicker.

45 days on a Whetzeldorf, 30 days on a Kit Clone! Now that's pre-ordering all material and having it ready to install.

On the X-Cubed, I had a rolling frame ready for construction to begin on March 9.

Doors were the last thing to be installed, on May 30, for the maiden voyage the following weekend.

So I guess that's frame to road in less than 90 days. Not bad considering I was also working full time.

Everything had been planned out on the computer in great detail though.

The 10 fastest builds would be from the time you started building it. To the time it was completely finished. We are not going to count add on's or changes later.

That's fast! I preordered most everything also. The only way to go!

Six years into mine and I just put in another skylight. I also added an aluminum easel for painting pictures and a rolling secretary's chair. Now I am contemplating another window, a big rig dual-direction metal vent and a guitar hook on the wall or ceiling (while parked only).

Of course, it's not a teardrop. :wine:

I built my little 3 x 3, levitating teardrop in about a couple of weeks. Total weight, 85 lbs, and was suspended off of my hitch reciever, no license, rear lights or wheels needed. The tip out, including the drawer for my feet, took another couple of days. A comical idea that was a bit too small, so I gave it away for a raffle . After 3 nights sleep, my knees got stuck under my chin..... :-)

Intriguing...

I've been thinking about that myself. In my mind, the fastest build has the fewest pieces of wood to cut, and consequently the fewest features. So if I were to design a really fast build, it would be a 4x8 side profile so you could cut it from one piece of wood.

Then you could add spars every 12 inches, over the entire top, front and back. Skin it with plywood, and your ready to go. It would be a larger version of Angib's pico light, which has no hatch.

A finish carpenter friend, Gary, built an 8 ft. row boat in half a day out of 4 x 8 sheets of Coroplast, cable ties and Gorilla Tape from Home Depot. One could do the same for a trailer with just a little beefing up with wood or steel as uprights on the chassis.
