Hurray I never like it anyway. I was always more comfortable with xfce but that's one of the nice things about linux you can make it what you want not what the corporations think you should use.

I tried Unity when Ubuntu first came out with it and it represented everything I hate about user interfaces. I've tried many desktops (linux lets you do that), but my favorite is the "Mate" desktop. Canonical's idea on Unity was because they 1) wanted to look more like other OSs and 2) to make it look the same across all platforms as they were going to do their own smartphones. Neither idea worked well.

Thanks for the post!

Mint was my distro of choice. But I recently switched to Ubuntu because of the more flexible dpi support. Now it looks like I'll be going back to Mint. I started with XFCE, but ended up using Cinnamon as it was much more polished.

Guess what I'll be doing this weekend?

I was going to ponder what this might mean for Mir, but Wikipedia already has it's obituary!

I'd gotten quite used to Unity, once they allowed the menus to be placed back on the windows instead of the goofy Mac approach across the top of the display. The Scopes feature (appropriately configured) turned out to be quite useful. (Which Microsoft copied with Windows 10).

I'm way ahead of you. Back when they thought the Unity desktop for Ubuntu was a good idea, I switched to Ubuntu-based Linux Mint using Gnome-based Maté desktop.

I had a feeling this was bound to happen with Unity. It seemed like they were trying so hard to be different, and borrowing ideas from Mac.

I've been using Linux since 93 or 94-ish and used Slackware back in the day. Been using Ubuntu since it started. Gnome had its problems years back, but the new Gnome Shell is fantastic! Nice and stable, and a mature platform.

I actually have a YouTube channel with a few Linux videos where I show you how to make your own Desktop Environment from scratch using the Ubuntu minimal install and a few packages to get a basic desktop with taskbar, launcher and a few goodies. It only uses 160 MB of RAM when booted up! Then I added a few more goodies and I'm up to a whole 230 MB of RAM LOL It's great for running on older hardware! I also have other videos on how to customize your setup and theme it.

If anyone's interested, I can post a link to my YouTube channel, I just don't want to push my channel out there to make it seem like I'm advertising or anything so I'll only do it if asked... I could talk about Linux for hours hahah

Please feel free to post the link. I'd be interested in it. I always play around with various distros and am now sampling "Point Linux 3.2" with the Mate desktop. It is debian and seems pretty snappy on old and underpowered systems. Just installed the 32 bit version on an old HP Mini 110 netbook. I'll see how it works on that thing.

Good thing in my opinion! Although I won't directly benefit from this, since I have stopped using Ubuntu a while ago and switched to Linux Mint. Maybe this is what I needed to switch back. :D
