third Brake Light?

Postby campingboy » Sun Apr 15, 2007 4:34 pm

Does anyone have a third brake light on there tear? My car has a separate turn and brake light. I want a third brake light in the top center of my hatch. I will be using a converter to change the wiring to operate a single light as Running/Brake/Stop. How would I wire in the extra brake light? I am going to be using LED lights?

Wire your 3rd brake light to the circuit in your trailer wiring brake and tail lamps.
Ahhh, you can't run brake/stop and tail lamps off of the same wire (circuit)
has to be two wires there for two seperate circuits. Or, do what Dale sez - LEDs, diodes and technology have pretty much ran over me.

Its not to difficult all you need is the lamp fixture and two diodes... Each diode is wired so brake light signal (constant on) keeps 3rd light on, no matter which position turn signal is in....

If I got diodes backwards in graphic somebody will be quick to say so....

As a side note my 2005 Chev pickup has center mount stoplight wired out to a separate connector at the rear of 7 prong towing connector... Check your owners manual for similar feature on your tow vehicle.

You could also wire it in from brake light switch (under dash?) all the way back to tow connector if you have a unused pin in connector...

I wuz thinkin' of somethin' like that Dale. I have a 3rd brake light on the camper shell door of my little P/U tow vehicle that's already wired up separately. I'm usin' a 6-pin elect connector & have a spare pin. If I come off the wire that goes to the camper shell brake light, to the extra pin, then direct to the 3rd brake light on the TD, plus ground of course, that should work OK ??

Dale-

I think that the diode diagram in your earlier post will flash the third brake light when the turn signals are used while the brakes are not applied. It may take that extra wire from the brake switch, or from a tap at the brake light if there are seperate brake and turn indicator bulbs in the tow vehicle. Let me know if I'm wrong here, it's kinda late now.

For six bucks I'd give that logic circuit from J.C. Whitney a try. Sounds like it would do the job according to their description. If it doesn't work you could always send it back.

Looks like it might actually be rocket science this time. Thanks Mike. :applause:

For a cheap 3rd eye stoplight, or cyclops, get a high level stoplight from an old astro van. 1999 or2000. Couple of screws and the whole unit comes off the roof and is ready to mount to your surface, VIOLA!!!!
