MK, check that your framing is at least 1.25 or better so as to have enough "meat" for the mounting screws...3/4" will be "too much not enough"(cajun slang)...

MK,

Now, I just need to cut out headliner without a router.

Unless you have a very long bit for your router you will have to cut from the inside. Hope you have a good full-head cover and an even better dust mask or respirator!!

You can drill 1 hole in each corner and use a jig saw or a hand saw to cut the hole

MK

Take your drill and a small drill bit. drill hole from the outside thru the headliner tight in each corner.
Go inside and connect the holes with a straight edge and cut carefully on the lines with a circular saw or your jig saw. You can plunge cut the circular saw but be very slow and get a good grip it can take off on ya. The jig saw is a little slower but safer. If you stay just inside the lines you can use a rasp or sander to touch up the edge.

Be careful when doing this. If you use too course a tooth blade or push a little too hard you can get some unwanted tearout or separation from the roof spars. JMO! :)

That's good information. Thanks. I'm thinking about using a hand saw to cut it out. I'll have more control and not have a power tool over my head :frightened:

Wish I had a roto-zip thingie.

MK I used a jig saw from the Bottom and it worked fine. Had lab type safety glasses on so didn't get dust in the eyes though.

If you used 1/8" or 2 layers of 1/8", you can also score and cut it with a razor knife. But be very keerful doing that, too.
Still graced with two eyes and ten fingers (due in no small part to luck!).

Just when you think a problem is solved, an uglier result replaces it.

If you haven't started cutting yet, buy some wide blue masking tape.
Drill your holes, put TAPE where your lines will go, mark on top of the tape, and you can cut it with lots less risk of tearout.
