Drill your holes, put TAPE where your lines will go, mark on top of the tape, and you can cut it with lots less risk of tearout.

mk, one suggestion, drill a hole in the frame for the wire and put it through and have a good length hanging. beore you skin the top, pull it back through to where it is just inside the hole so you can grab it with some needle nose plyers. after you cut the skin you can pull it back through. i made the mistake of leaving my wires hanging and when i cut the skin out with my saw i cut the wire off. darwin award. luckly i grabed the end with some pliers and it pulled out a couple of inches. so i had enough to hook up. saved again.

I wished I had caught this thread a while ago. I framed my vent opening at 14" square. The woodworking is perfect. Now I've got to cut the opening bigger! And I'm all done installing the ceiling! I try to be amazing, but most of the time, it doesn't work out.

:x :x :x

Duane, a possible save for your ceiling...first, do nothing until you have the fan in hand to actually check out clearances...it may be that you can wiggle it into place with the biggest problem being clearance for the wiring...the inside trim ring fits inside the fan housing(I think) which means the ceiling could remain untouched just opening up the framing above it...a router with a long shank bit could be your best friend here...at worst, the flange on the trim piece is fairly wide and should hide any booboos...

You could run a router along it using an 1/8 rabit bit. If your roof isn't too thick, or if you can find a bit long enough, you can run a top bearing pattern bit to remove the rest.

Mary...good advice all around so far. I put in the frame first, skinned the inside ceiling, drilled a hole in the ceiling and routed out a hole in ceiling....came in handy to hang a light through when working inside!

After running wire in the roof (mine had driver side fron wiring hookup) I then lleft the wire hanging through a hole in frame.

Skinned roof, routed the vent hole and slipped the fan in and voila! Hole too tight to fit both fan and wire in the hole. I ended up chileling out a recess in one framing board so the wire wouldn't bind the fan when I tired to insert it.

Moral of the story....don't, don't, dont create a 14" square hole...!

There is plenty of trim to make the opening 14 1/2 X 14 1/2 , to don't make it more difficult than it has to be!! :)
