hitch tomorrow.... wiring ???

Postby oklahomajewel » Fri Sep 29, 2006 3:02 pm

I'm finally getting the hitch on my car tomorrow at my local Uhaul.

They will do the wiring and all too, for my 01 Honda Accord.

Is there anything special I should tell them about the wiring ? Or the connector?
I"m getting a class 1 hitch,
My tear has it's own battery for the cabin etc.

My taillights are just two round lights , not led, in the back of the galley.
I will have reflectors on the side, but not lights.
Some things are way over my head !! ...but it keeps me looking UP!

Hi Julie,
You aren't running anything unusual so Uhaul should do a great job.

Are your tail lights visible from the side? If not, using side lights may be a good idea. Missouri requires side visibility but normal wiring works fine for it.

Way to get it done.

I don't think this will matter unless you want to charge the battery from the tow vehicle.

Are reflectors an acceptable alternative? I thought you needed to put a red light on the side as far back as possible and an amber light at the farthest point forward. I did because most trailers come that way from the mfg. It could vary from state to state, I don't know it it's a DOT thing.

:) Juile, I had hitch and wiring for my Honda CRV professionally installed.
I am not a professional but did want the feature of my trailer's battery
disconnected from the Honda when I turned off the engine.

My trailer battery is being charged from my Honda CRV while on the road.
I have a 6 pin plug and had them put in a solenoid to lift the connection to
the trailer battery when I shut off my engine. This stops any drain of the tow
vehicles start battery in the event of long duration connection to the trailer.

The other way to stop the possible situation of draining the car battery while
stopped is to unplug the trailer cable. The issue is if you forget to plug it back
in then you are going down the road without lights on your trailer or charging
your trailer battery. :)

Julie, it is Federal law to have side marker lights, a red one on the rear side as far back as is practical and an amber one as far forward as practical...on both sides...these lights are powered by the same wire that powers your taillights....

brown(tail and marker lights)
green(right blinker and brake)
yellow(left blinker and brake)

Yes, and you also have to have reflectors on the rear and sides.
