power connection

Postby blk05m6gto » Wed Dec 13, 2006 3:16 pm

Hello all. I amwondering how everyone gets power to there tear..... I am running a converter charger, 110vac A/C unit, 2 110vac plugs, 2 outside lights, vent fan, and 3 inside lights. Also going to have 2 12vdc outlets. I am now to the stage of wiring it all up. I went to but a weather proof male RV stlye connector for the outside and 100.00 bucks...... Doubt that. I am now thinking of mounting a box underneath the back of the tear and making a double male ext. cord for the park. Just make sure i plug the tear in first...... What is everyone else doing? Any help would be good. Thanks a lot. Bill

DO NOT make a double male cord, they are illegal and highly dangerous. If a kid was playing around the back of your tear and unpluged it it could kill him.

What I did that is cheap was to mount the male end of the plugin cord that feeds the 110V wiring on inside of the cabinet near the rear of my trailer, then I mounted a weatherproof single hole cover on the bottom of the trailer. When I plug in I open the weatherproof cover, feed an extension cord through it and plug it into the cord that is attached to the trailer. The connections are out of the weather, and there is enough room to feed a cable fo TV through the hole when I have acess to cable.

Bill:

Here are a couple of visual look sees for the type of receptacle you might
find for your power inlet. Marine type outlets and hardware stores should
carry them in similar configurations.

Here is a thread that may help you see the covered receptacle most often
used to mount to the outside of your rig.

Bill:

Bruce and others will most likely come alone and give you firm advice as to
your breaker size. Some use 15 AMP and many use 20 AMP inlet fusing.
GFCI seems to be a prudent choice for the trailer as well.

See this thread to get your mind wet on the subject till the big boys come
along and give you a more definite answer.

I'm simply using a plastic power hatch available from any RV dealer for less than $5.00 This allows you to have an extension cord inside the camper. The hatch holds the male end so all you need to do is pull it out. The plug and wire that is. You can then close the hatch and there is a sliding door that is large enough for the wire. Clear as mud? I'll try to get a picture.

I have the same outlet cover that bledsoe has. Mine is strictly a cover that I run an extension cord out of. One time I forgot my extension cord so I just parked the trailer close to the pole.

Just found another style of inlet that has a more retro look. Price is good too.

Here is what I was talking about. http://www.rvsurplussalvage.com/catalog ... ct_id=4225

Simple and cheap unless you want or need 30 Amp service.
