Portable 120V power using disposable/rechargeable batteries

Postby Ira » Mon Jun 04, 2007 3:30 pm

Here's the end game:

I have a small guitar amplifier. Wanna be able to rig something up that will power it ooff of small disposeable or rechargeable NiMH batteries (Cs or Ds) so I can play anywhere.

Yeah--I know that I'm gonna "lose" juice in the conversion, but I'm not gonna do this all that often, and as long as I have extra batteries, I'm cool.

There are two amps out there sold for just this purpose, they take C batteries, but I have a cool one and was wondering whether it was possible to rig up something like this without adding 50 pounds of weight to it.

If anyone responds before I get home from the office, I'll post specs on the amp. It's a small Fender.
Here we go again!

IF amp is solid state.... You may be able to bypass the AC power supply area and tap in after power supply at lower system voltage.... But this requires knowledge of amp internals... Is there a schematic of amp circuitry inside case???

I got my son one of these to take to his Mom's house so he didn't have to drag the bigger amp. it was only $25 at the local guitar store and doesn't sound bad. runs of a 9v battery - for a long time

Dale's idea would be the most efficient. Unless it's an antique amp it probably uses low voltage internally.

Another way to do it would be to get one of those portable power supply gizmos that amounts to a gell cell battery and a small inverter inside a case with a handle.

A little 300 watt inverter would prolly be the easiest thing to run it with? Heck, I've seen them for $25. or less on ebay... Yeah, it's not exactly effieient? But, who cares at a camp ground.
