Adding backup lights using a 4 prong plug

Postby oakinteriors1 » Sat Nov 23, 2013 10:01 am

Is it possible to tap into one of the 4 wires on the trailer light plug to instal a switch to manually turn on backup lights when needed...

Does trailer have a battery, if so just power BKUP lights off it, if you are switching them on manually anyway its a simpler task, also you can use them for camp lighting(?), for night time setups...

It would be easier (simpler in my mind) to convert to 5 or 6 or 7 wire plugs and just make it automatic....

The running lights would be a good option, thanks...
As far as going to a different plug? I just got this $80. wiring harness for the 2012 Sonic....Wouldn't know where to begin to tap into the backup lights...

I wired up some LED bulb with switch on the camper battery. Two on the back and one on each other side of the camper for at night camping or not. It works well for me.

$6.95 + your LEDs. can't beat that. You can even find amber colored ones that are better on bugs while camping.

If you're just looking for manual operation, just install a couple of battery powered, white LED lamps back there and get out and turn them on. Don't mess with wiring them into anything.

i am working on adding a single pole double throw switch in line with my trailer back up light that is powered by my tow vehicle, I will wire the switch so that when I switch the back up light on it will operate from trailer battery power, and be disconnected from the pow vehicle power until I turn it off, and then it will automatically come on when the tow vehicle is in reverse

Image

hot power for the light would go to post 1P , the tow vehicle back up hot would be connected to 1T , and the trailer battery hot would be hooked to 2T

-sorry I didn't understand the 4 pin plug part-

I mounted two inexpensive driving light under the trailer pointing straight down immediatly behing the wheels and inboard enough to keep them out of the spray and rocks. My thought was in the event of a tire emergency they would offer indirect light to change a tire. My main reason was to illuminate the ground without blasting my camping neighbors in case of a late arrival. I simply tapped into the brown running light wire and placed a weatherproof switch on the hot leg. I reach just under the edge of the trailer and flip them on and when done switch them off.
