Where to put battery if no room on tongue?

Postby atcNick » Fri Mar 07, 2014 10:47 am

Looking at putting a 12v system on my cargo trailer. There's very little space on the tongue. I've read you shouldn't put it inside due to the fumes. Any suggestion on alternating mounting ideas?

Your'e right, your basic marine battery vents hydrogen. It looks like your only option is inside.

AGM batteries are sealed -they don't need to be vented.. They are a bit more expensive but do not vent, and I think you can install them on their side if need be. You might search AGM batteries on this site.

The other option is a marine battery, inside, but vented to the outside. It's not infrequently done that way. They make battery boxes just for that issue I think.

Yup, if you put it inside, build a box sealed to the inside and vented to the outside.

I have a tear with galley. My battery is in the galley at the floorboard. Sealed to the sleeping compartment, vented out through the galley.

Depends on how much ground clearance you have, but I hang mine underneath the floor with a bolt-together cage.

I like this idea. I assume you just drop a battery box down right into that frame??

I've seen that material at Home Depot, what do you use to cut it?

Yeah, I put cut a piece of 1/4" plywood to fit the bottom of the frame and just rest the battery on that. Then you can get battery tie-downs at any autoparts store. I used a handheld jigsaw with metal blade. Cut right through with no problem.

I just put my AGM battery in the cabin. The cabin isn't vented, but it's far from air-tight so I'm not worried about H2 buildup.

Mine is in my galley in a small cabinet vented to the out side.

Are you sure that a battery shouldn't be mounted inside? Several million VW beetle were made with a battery under the back seat, under a metal spring seat with an ashtray less that 2 feet away.

Boy does that bring memories of my early 60's Bugs. Had holes in the floor pan all the time. I was constantly repairing that area in under the seat. Opps, sorry for the digression.

My Nash Metropolitan also has the battery under the rear seat cushion. I've never read where it is a safety issue...of course those cars are anything but air tight. I didn't have a way to mount the battery on the tongue of my trailer, so I put it in a plastic battery box under the bathroom sink. My trailer is larger than a tear, so I'm not worried about the small amount of gassing. And with it inside, it is out of the elements and safe from thieves.

Do to space and weight considerations I put my two batteries here. This puts the weight behind my axel.
