Finally got me some solar

Postby ksmack01 » Sun Mar 30, 2014 9:18 pm

I have finally installed me some solar on my camper. I saved my pennies and got me a 50 watt panel and paired it with a Sunsaver 6. I tried an el-cheapo controller that lasted a whole day before it burned up. For the very little power I use, I think it will be just right. I also changed all my 12volt lights to LED to help with battery consumption. Just thought id thank the folks on here that unknowingly helped in the whole process.

Waiting for "someday" will leave you on your deathbed wondering why you didn't just rearrange your priorities and enjoy the time you had, instead of waiting for a "better" time to come along...

Only thing I would change is making the prop rod collapsible so you can adjust angle to match the sun.

Yeah, I did that on two different trailers and it's not worth the effort, IMHO. The only time I ever tilt the panel is in the shoulder months of fall and spring. That time of year it's pretty much a full tilt. The rest of the year the panels lay flat.

Bruce I had the same thought. Living in Florida the sun is either directly overhead (summer) or slightly in the southern sky ( winter) . Ideally the panel would work best if it were detachable from the roof and could be pointed to the sun at any given time during the day. My small panel was like that and I didnt want to have to store it and run wires through my camp site to get a little more charge time. I wanted a clean look that is easy to use and quick. I am surprised at how great the panel works. I have a 4 day camping trip planned next week to test it out. And thanks for the suggestion :)
