AC Hacking a 9,000 Btu Mini Split in trailer or RV

Postby OverTheTopCargoTrailer » Thu Aug 14, 2014 10:01 pm

Does anyone have any experience using a 9,000 to 12,000 btu mini split in RV or trailer ?

Was looking to see if someone had done it.....and has some longer term results ?

These units have up to SEER 27 and supply both heating and cooling

Thanks OTTCT

I thought I saw some pictures and words somewhere with this being used. I will look around for it. May not have been in TNTTT.
This will determine if I am crazy or not.

Here is a you tube story on one. I think this is the one I remember.

Here is a link to my google search with other items listed.

Hope this helps a little.

On page 3 of this Forum there are inputs from the installer in the video. Also, there are discussions by others on split units in this forum.

Because all these guys only talk about how it won't work because the travel movement causes
the copper pipes to get hard - break and or leak.....around the compressor ?
sort of like the foam sprayed into trailer walls - MYTH of - not working 500 times, however its not based on real experience.

The you tube guy video has his kids screaming in the video non stop & no on the road usage results...
he is also using a cheapo $399 unit with no heating & NO INVERTER !!
posted June 2013 - no follow up however ?

Yea - he does not say to much in the comments....BUT he did say he drives with it on ?
since it only works on shore power per him - not sure where he gets the power from while driving ?

Mr Picky Picky

What say yee

7 x 18 trailer , mini split SEER 20 - 9,000 Btu heating & cooling, 675 watts running max

5 hour run time - interior temp 76 , exterior temp 84

What is the calculated power usage ?

Postby OverTheTopCargoTrailer » Sat Aug 16, 2014 9:04 am

Math hint

Standard 13,000 Btu roof top RV AC. Unit uses 1,300 watts at full power
So 1,300 watts x 5 hours = 6,500 watts at full power or 6.5 kw

Question therefore :

7 x 18 trailer , mini split SEER 20 - 9,000 Btu heating & cooling, 675 watts running max
5 hour run time - interior temp 76 , exterior temp 84

What is the calculated power usage ?

I'm still a little confused, I don't get it at all ?

You all think nothing & will drop $900 on a new roof AC with 13,000 btu - SEER 10 maybe, cooling only , sucking 1,300 watts & needing a big LOUD BELCHING - 4k genset to crank it up sucking mega gas :x :x
You can't even sleep running the genset unless your deaf ?

Throw in a few extra bucks more to get a mini - SEER 20 for heating & cooling
Uses 50% less power, gen set is 50% smaller, use 50% gas or diesel , super silent running mini
I don't see the downside to the mini split ?

WHAT THE HELL AM I MISSING

Better yet, run a window unit and a cube heater, keep 2/3'rds of your money and half the power requirement.

No one here needs 9k BTU's of cooling. No one.
The more stuff I take along, the more time I spend taking care of my stuff!

How can you calculate theoretical power use w/o knowing the heat gain/loss through the walls/roof/floor/windows, or the actual run time ? The assumpyion being that the split mini will not run constantly once the interior has cooled,

The split mini will use less power than a conventional A/C because it is more efficient. If you have some real life data for a conventional system, then it should be relatively easy to compare SEER numbers to come up with an approximation that should be good enough for guesstimating.
