Porch Light Switch - Using 125V AC switch on a 12V DC ciruit

Postby Tommy2tone_1999 » Sun Aug 31, 2014 9:22 am

The LED porch lights I'm mounting have external switches. I was wisely advised to patch an internal switch into the ciruit so I could see what goes bump in the night in safety. I purchased 2 16A 125V AC rocker switches like the one shone here. Is is safe to use these switches on a 12V DC circuit that is fused for 20A ? I think I know the answer to this, but maybe my assumption is incorrect.

With the very low current of the led lights, you'll have no trouble. It's when you get into higher current loads that you can have problems.
Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.

20 amps of LED lighting would probably be enough to guide the Space Shuttle down from orbit. 8)
Your current draw is likely in the range of .25-1 amps per light, so the rockers are more than fine.
