Trailer cable for caravan wiring?

Postby felixx » Tue Mar 24, 2015 3:58 am

OK so I have some new 5 core trailer wire

I also have a tear that will ONLY run 12V Led lighting (mainly 2W units)

LED will draw less current than incandescent bulbs right?

Can I use the trailer wire safely to wire up my LEDS?

Or am I stupid? I just thought it could be tidier

Just use speaker wire mate.
More than adequate and small and easy to route

The danger in wiring is using wire gauge to small and it can not carry amperage load device may require.... Number of conductors in "cable" is irrelevant other then the "bulk" as you try to conceal it in build...

Since most interior LED lighting devices are low voltage and low current you might get away with 18 gauge wire, but 16 would be more on safe side... One thing I was taught in my years as communications equipment installer was if in doubt go bigger (with in reason of course)....

"5 core trailer wire" ?
We dont know the gauge of these wires, But typical 'trailer wire' is 16-14 ga. (or 1-1.5mm for you folks in the better part of the world...)
This size conductor will carry 5-8 amps under even bad conditions,(I am not going to look up the charts on this.. But ideal conditions much more) what can equal enormous amount of LED light, even incandesent would be awfully bright...
Your 5 core wire will be fine.

Your last question,,,
You are planning to build a caravan right ?? Maybe thats your answer....
