Fantastic Fan Question

Postby McGuffin » Sat May 02, 2015 7:29 pm

Hi from Ireland,

It would be great if some kind person out there can help with this one thanks ....

I invested some time ago n a 4000 series fantastic fan. I am about to wire up my tear drop trailer:http://www.tnttt.com/viewtopic.php?f=50&t=59456

the only thing is that I intend now to wire the teardrop for use exclusively with shore power. In Ireland that's 220 v and UK 240v. My question is what is the best way to rig the fantastic fan up to this mains supply. I read somewhere that it is just a matter of bringing the wires back to something like a 'phone charger and then plugging that in. I haven't tried that yet (!) but any advise would be great thanks

A computer power supply will supply 12V to your fan from the mains. I'm not sure what color wires you need to use, but someone here will know the answer. Or a small automotive battery charger. Or... ? A phone charger may not have enough oomph.

I can tell you that it draws about 4-5 amps when turned to high. So I think as long as a phone charger is producing that, it'd work. Give it a test drive, eh?

For the power needs for the Fantastic Fan, you need 1 amp on low to 2 amps on high. A computer power supply might be an easier find.

 I think you might be right. I think 4-5 is high.

A computer supply has the possible advantage of being free.  The cheapest auto charger at Ubiquitous Auto Parts will probably be cheaper that a computer supply, and the wires are already marked plus and minus. The FanFan won't care whether the DC is pure or not, so a 12V transformer and a rectifier would work.

I had a small agm battery that I used to charge with a 12v thingo similar to a phone charger that was sold to me for this purpose at the same time I got the battery so it shouldn't be an issue.
Here in Australia we have dick Smith and jaycar witch are similar to America's radio shack, I suggest you find your equivalent and they'll point you in the right direction.
If it all gets to hard you could take a battery charger and run it off a small battery, could be an idea so you've still got a fan if you have no power

Hi Dale, Capn, Tony and Shadow,

Thank you for all your help  !

I’ll go ahead and put in a couple of wires from the fan hatch to where the 240v socket is going and then later on hook up an AC to DC power supply with a of minimum 5 amp DC rating. I guess something like this will probably do the biz:

http://www.ebay.ie/itm/12v-5-Amp-5A-500 ... 27e58c58ba

Thanks again and I’ll keep you all posted :)

Yea that's similar to what I had except mine was more similar to an old school Nokia phone charger in style and size witch may or may not suit you better.

Actualy discussing fantastic fans how do you guys generaly run the wires ?
I was looking at mine in the box and plan on running the wires for it myself but they look like where they come out of the fan itself they will interfere with the inner shroud?
What's the trick

I am going to make a suggestion. Plan for more than you think you want

I planned and specked what went into our tear with the aim to serious boondocking, lots of power 120AC and 12VDC and planned for more. It is amazing how all of that has been used. Plan for a converter battery and wiring while you are building, more than you think you need.

There is a notch in the inner shroud allowing the wires to be traced there. The outer shroud (show piece) simply pushes up on the outside of the inner ring. Be aware that the outer shroud will likely need trimming. I took about 2" off of mine

The notch is around my finger but may be hidden from view.

So the wire gets set into and just slides up that notch?

yes.....try it first but you'll see there is actually quite a bit of room up there (at least there was with mine)
