PD 4045 and a secondary inverter

Postby JeffofCT » Fri Jul 03, 2015 9:54 pm

I like the idea of a PD 4045 that keeps the batteries charged and will route 110v or 12v with shore power. I have an inverter. I expect then that the PD 4045 will have a 12v output that will connect to the inverter. I want to avoid having two separate 110 receptacles--one from the PD4045 when connected to shore power and one from the inverter when not on shore power. I am still weighing the need for a 110v equipped galley.

On my build I decided to have two completely different circuits for the 110 volt power side. The reason I did was due to the air conditioning unit which goes in the front. I can't run that hog off the battery (it would suck it dry in an hour or two), so it only powers up from the PD4045 side, which relies on shore power or a generator for the 110v input. The other side (the inverter side of things) powers the galley & any little stuff in the cabin, which is low power stuff & can easily take a load from the battery (LED lighting, TV, sound bar, etc).

I have a 1000 watt inverter I'm using, which could easily supply enough current for the air conditioning unit, but the battery storage capacity is the limiting factor here. I'm erring on the side of caution with respect to loads the battery can provide for everything. The air conditioner would equal out to about a 38 amp draw at 12 volts when running. It's unrealistic to expect a 90 amp hour battery to provide that much juice for more than a couple of minutes without there being issues with excessive power consumption, heat & reduced battery life in general.

The air conditioner is a "necessity" where I live, as daytime temps have recently been at 100 and above for weeks now. If we're up in altitude & in the shade, no problems. If it's lower elevations, it can be 140 inside if it sits in the sun for an hour or two. Mad dogs & Englishmen......

I used a 30A DPDT switch to disconnect power to the PD (otherwise it will try and use the inverter 120) Do you want 120 in the Galley, useful for the coffee maker electric fry pan (as long as you have power why use Propane?
