Battery price online vs in-store

Postby drshoe » Tue Sep 15, 2015 8:24 pm

Hey folks, I'm looking at getting a Group 27 AGM 12v 100Ah battery. It will likely be kept floating the vast majority of its life. If I walk into a store, and they even have one in stock, I'll pay about double what I'd pay if I buy a UPG battery online.

How is this even possible? Is there that big of a difference in the batteries or am I somehow avoiding a core charge by purchasing online? Anybody have any experience with a UB121000 or similar battery?

Local store has overhead, then they have to pay for shipping, and then there is employee wages and healthcare...

Online seller can be as small as a one man operation in his extra bedroom and anything you order is drop shipped from same manufacturer or warehouse the local store gets their products (inventory) from...

I have been searching lately for 6v batteries and all the ones that interested me had very high shipping costs.
So far the best prices for Trojan batteries has been at a local golf cart reseller. I haven't started the local search yet for AGM's.

I bought from a place here in Arizona. Got a group 27 AGM Trojan from this outfit. Not cheap, good battery & best price I could find anywhere ($250 delivered). They sell different brands. See what you find...

I will eventually need a battery for my trailer but don't plan to buy one until I have something to power with it. I was looking a few months ago at Costco and got these prices that might be useful reference point for you. This was as of June 5 near Seattle:

Group 24: $72.99 plus tax and core charge (appears to be a marine "deep cycle" battery)
Group 27: $78.99 plus tax and core charge (appears to be a marine "deep cycle" battery)
6v Golf Cart: $83.99 plus tax and core charge (would need 2 of course to get 12v, actual deep cycle batteries)

I tried searching on the item #s shown on the price tags to get more specific for you but they don't appear on their website.

I haven't decided on a battery yet, although already have a PD4045 power panel for it. I expect I'll be buying a battery in a month or two.

While living in the "boonies" has it's many advantages. Finding things at good prices is very ltough or paying the high shippings cost can be quite expensive for heavy objects like batteries.
That forces me to look local or wait unti I head into a much larger metro area.
