Solar Panels, Black Friday

Postby MtnDon » Mon Nov 23, 2015 4:19 pm

Solar Blvd is having a Black Friday sale. I mention this mostly for those who want or need a "12 volt" panel. There are many places to get the higher voltage panels, 24 VDC and up. Those are aimed at the grid tied folks and can be obtained in most urban areas without too much trouble. The 12 VDC are hard to find locally and most of the prices seem to be around $1.50 a watt with shipping sometimes extra.

Solar Blvd has always had 12 VDC panels at reasonable cost, IMO. Have at look here at their linkon Friday to see the deals.

Let's see if I can paste in the email details with the pricing.....
(shipping is extra. they have a calculator on the cart page. For me it works out cheaper than any other place I have seen.

Don, I like this find. How did you do it? I even googled for it now and did not find what you posted.
1. I might just consider ordering two 130-150W units for the CT. I do not need them yet, but will in the spring. So ordering them now may be doable.

2. Now about those 24 volt units. If you noticed my posts lately on one of the PV topic posts, I wrote about looking into running solar 24v to an off-grid water heater to feed my regular water heater/boiler for my radiant in floor system. I have not thought out all the details, mainly with how to start and stop water circulation from the off grid heater. But I am sure I can figure it out and if it has a high potential of reducing my demand for propane, then why not buy two 24V panels now on a gamble.

As a registered customer I get preview emails. The sale $$ will show on their website on Friday only.

My rule of thumb is small systems can often make use of 12 volt panels. Use the panels in parallel connection with a PWM charge controller. Parallel panels are more forgiving if a few cells on one panel are shaded. In series a few shaded cells can lower the output of a whole series string.

Bigger systems can often make better use of the larger 24+ volt panels which offer the lowest cost per watt. However, with a 12 volt battery system then you need an MPPT controller. More $$.

Sometimes a smallish system costs about the same either way. Pay more for the smaller panels and less for the PWM controller vs. pay less for the larger panels and more for the MPPT. In this case I already have the Brat PWM charge controller I got as a beta from Midnight.

We've been away over the weekend and will get around to looking at that link to the controller and water heating soon.

I'm also a SolarBlvd customer and noticed these deals.

They've been a good company to deal with. I have a folding 120w panel kit (with controller, case, wiring) that had a bad controller. They send me a new, much better one that has been working like a champ since. Good customer service.

I have to take some measurements, but I'm hoping one of the smaller ones above will fit on my teardrop in between the hurricane hinge and the Fantastic Fan cover. So it will continuously charge my Optima battery when driving or parked in the sun.

I bought the same kit and had the same problem. Took three replacements before I got one that worked but it's OK now. The kit was a good price and came with some useful cables but I won't buy from them again. One bad part is understandable, three is ridiculous.

Thanks Don! I ordered two small panels (20 watt) just because they were cheap. I may use them to make a small suitcase setup, as a remote charging station if I'm in a shady spot & need to top off the battery while camping. Figured with the price I got ($64 with shipping included for both) it would be worth it to have a pair for future use.

I went there Friday and today. To VA the shipping costs for 2 120w units was 25% of the total cost. $77 out of about $345 total. Maybe that I
s still a good deal; I do not know. But I passed.
