PD4135 fuse question

Postby David Olson » Mon May 23, 2016 5:59 pm

I bought a PD 4135 converter/charger, it came with a 40 amp fuse the #1 DC fuse slot.
I tried calling the company but they were already closed.
My question is does the 40 amp fuse get removed after the initial startup then get replaced with another fuse not to exceed 30 amps?
Below is what is says in the owners manual. I don't understand what it means.
I got the DC side all wired up and gave it juice. Everything worked. Now do I remove the 40 amp fuse?
Thanks for any help.

REVERSE BATTERY PROTECTION CIRCUIT
If a battery is accidentally hooked up backwards, the converter will be protected. An easily accessible ATC
type fuse will blow when a battery is connected in reverse. Replace with same type and rating.
Amp/Model # of fuses Fuse size
35 l 40 (amps)
The DC Section:
The DC panel features 6 branch positions rated up to 30A for accessories. Each branch has an LED to
indicate which fuse has blown. See product labeling for actual DC fuse position ratings.
CAUTION
FOR CONTINUED PROTECTION AGAINST RISK OF FIRE OR ELECTRICAL
SHOCK, REPLACE ONLY WITH SAME TYPE AND RATING FUSE.

Did you ever get your answer on this? I'm curious too. I feel kind of like a big dummy, but the only place i see to connect the battery is off the big red lead and the big white lead both coming off the top of the dc section.

No do not replace it. The 40A fuse your talking about is there to protect your PD4135 in case you were to accidentally cross your battery wiring up, ie: crossing the negative and positive.

Hi guys. Bumping this thread to try and figure out a question within it.

I have the pd4135 also and I'm probably an idiot, but I cannot figure out where the battery positive comes in??

Does it get sent in from the first red wire on DC circuit 1? Other then that I can't fathom what connects it?

Hey tommy,
If you look at the back side of the circuit board there should be a wire pigtail coming from the spot noted on your wiring diagram. Your "battery positive" will hook to that pigtail. Same thing goes for your (battery negative) there will be a wire pigtail off the back of the board for it as well.

Your right though, the wiring diagrams leave a lot to be desired.
My PD4045 actually has lugs that feed the DC side of the board.

The 4135 I recently installed does not have the battery positive lead labeled. If you're looking at the back of the unit it is the red lead that is the furthest to the right (furthest outside). To confirm, look at the circuit board / fuse block on the front of the unit. Above the fuse block on the left you should see "battery positive +" or something like that silk screened in the circuit board. This is also the fuse location for the 40 amp fuse.

Hey tommy,
Even though I have the PD4045 which is slightly different then yours, I used two runs of #8 gauge which roughly equals a single #6 gauge wire. I used the 8 gauge because I had it on hand and my run from the battery to the PD4045 is very short, less then 3 foot each way.

Thanks!! Yeah the pd4135 provides what looks like 8 or 10 Guage with a 10 inch lead from the board to connect to battery. . That's why it was confusing. But I'm guessing it will be fine.. I'll keep run as short as possible.

The instructions are truly terrible. Doesn't say much just a that picture. Trying to figure my trailer charging system now hah

I used 10 gauge to my battery. The run is less than 3 feet. Before the PD4135 I had a WFCO. The 10 gauge worked fine until the WFCO died.

Re: PD4135 fuse question

Postby rflowers82 » Thu Mar 09, 2017 6:39 pm

Hello,
I'm installing a PD 4135 into my trailer and I have some questions regarding the wiring. On the back of the unit they're is 7 lead wires. I understand the white wire on the far left is ground and the red wire on the far right is positive. What is confusing is the remaining 5 wires in the middle, 4 black wires and one red wire. The red wire appears to be the same gauge as the positive wire. What is that red wire for? Is it just a bigger wire that can hold a larger amperage load compared to the black wires. Your help in this matter is appreciated. I tried to attach a photo so you could see you visually but the photo would not attach.

Thank You,
Ryan
