The Glow (problem with seven prong plug

Postby Shadow Catcher » Fri Nov 25, 2016 3:53 pm

I have lost count of the times I have had a problem with the seven prong plug, basically water seeping into the plug corroding and shorting between connections. This is manifested by the LED trailer lights glowing. The last time I cleaned and put grease in.
The plug is a replacement all connections copper.
So what do I do. Replace the cord with a sealed end...?

Open the plug up and cover the fittings with dieletic grease. Do the same with the exterior connections on both the plug and your tow vehicle's plug.

In the winter I put my plug in a baggie and tap it bottom up on my jack handle (rigged so any moisture will run down and out).

I have just recently found the spray rubber by Rustoleum. Much like the flex seal spray they are advertising all over TV the Rustoleum brand is cheaper and worked great in my application. Perhaps a light coating might just be the ticket ????

What Tony said. The only problem we've had while towing was this plug (right turn signal on ours)! Dielectric grease is the way to fix it. Sorry I didn't do this when it was new & had never been used. Wouldn't have had any trouble.

several of my trailers/vehicles use the 7-pin connectors & i haven't had any issues except on the one on my F-350 that I KNOW was exposed to salt water on many occasions and had to be replaced after about 8 years

SALT WORMS may be the culprit and the resuting green corrosion may be eating up the contacts

THANKS for the DIELECTRIC GREASE suggestion, the next replacement will get an appropriate slathering

for you folks who live up in the frozen north and subject your toys to salted roads would a dose of SALT AWAY be in order ?

I did actually had a fair amount of dielectric grease. Bob's Idea using the spray rubber may bear thinking about. The plug is now in a baggy.
Just seems like there should be a high quality (Kind of an oxymoron when referring to RV stuff) plug available.

MY only thought is baggie may promote condensation and there for promote corrosion... IF moisture is getting in to back side (cable side) I would seal it all with RTV....

On my first teardrop I had corrosion problems and since then I use a 8' molded wiring harness along with the junction box at the bottom of the page.
I haven't had any issues at all since then.
I mount the sealed junction box, facing the rear, on the first cross member of the chassis.
The factory installed 7 pin connection on my tow vehicle faces at about 45 degrees down so water doesn't collect there to cause problems.
When disconnected from the tow vehicle I keep the connector end in one of these that I mount on the tongue.
It keeps the connector facing down.
