What's weird is the 3000 is actually QUIETER than the 2000, by a few decibels. (Does just a few decibels, like 3, make a big difference?)

I heard the 3000 with no load, and I was amazed by how quiet it was--but that's a good point about a load making it noisier. I never thought of that.

My plan is to go with the 2000 because it's just too many bucks for the 3000.

Ira, 3 decibels is considered the smallest difference in sound level that the human ear can discern. The interesting thing is that it also represents a 2X differnece in the sound pressure, or the actual amount of energy in the sound. So while it might be a differnece that is hard to hear, there is a huge engergy difference.

Hi Tom

Every 10 Decibels increase is a doubling of the noise, so 3 db = 30%more noise, how does that fit in with your post?

I'm just guessing here, because I sure don't know the math or the sound physics, but...

Although you say every 10 decibels doubles the noise (I believe you), maybe that's based on it exponentially getting louder. Know what I mean?

Like it's not a straight percentage thing where 3 decibels would actually be 33.33% of 10.

Like I said, just a guess.

OK, I gotta find that book again. That is what happens when I post late at night. :duh:  What I do remember for sure is that Ira is right about it being a logrithmic relationship. It took me a long time to understand the difference between a linear pot and an audio pot, but the difference is that the audio pot has to be logrithmic to give a linear audio response. If I can find that book around here, I'm gonna look up the rest cause now Im curious.

Hi Ira

Yes I boo boo'd saying three decibels would be one third, I already knew the fact is was Logrithmic (that was the main thrust of my post) and then blindly did 3 decibels = 30% DUH

http://www.gcaudio.com/resources/howtos/loudness.html

Just tried to do a doubling calculation, there is a legend that someone asked to be paid on doubled up grains of rice on the squares of a chess board

ie 1 on 1
2 on 2
4 on 3
16 on 4
256 on 5
65536 on 6
4294967296 on 7

By Square 12 Excel cannot cope with the number !!!

Square 11 = 1.3408E+154

Actually, I think the Honda 3000 may only be like one decibel quieter than the 2000.

If I wasn't so lazy, I would check.
