12 volt television or receiver?

Postby Treeview » Sat Jun 23, 2018 8:50 pm

My television died. Since I'll be in my camper soon it seems to make sense to get either a 12 v TV or just a receiver.

I've got 20" monitor that works nicely with my laptop. Why buy another screen?

Are there any recommendations for receivers?
What features should I have?
Am I heading down the wrong path?

Thanks

Tom

The 19" TV at walmart uses a wall-wart and is really a 12v TV. Just need to wire in a 12v plug.

Yes...I know about 12v TVs

Seems simpler to have only one screen though. That's why I'm asking about a TV receiver

  • Why get a TV at all? Unless you spend big bucks on antennas to get good (or any) reception at many camping locales. Unless KOA's are your primary destinations. I have a 4x8, so conditions are cramped, somewhat, so I just use my 8" Lenovo Yoga 3 tablet, as my video entertainment source (I have a Pioneer car stereo-the same as in my truck-as my audio, with CD's on a shelf), when confined to my trailer, usually at night during the usual thunderstorm.
  • If I'm not viewing the weather reports, then I just hang it on the wall, inches from my face (I'm a side sleeper), and it seems like a big-screen TV (w/ Dolby Atmos stereo!). I have 253 videos and 400+ songs/old-time radio programs stored on its' 128gb sd card, and carry a 128gb flash drive with more. If I leave it in the truck (where I have it mounted for GPS/mapping usage), by mistake, then I'll use my S7 phone, and the flash drive. However, after a full day of enjoying nature and conversing with friends at camp, I seldom stay awake long enough to use either.

You can use your laptop to receive OTA TV, then you can use your monitor.

Hauppauge makes great tuners. We use a small desktop PC with their internal card type, as a DV-R for OTA at home with NextPVR as the recorder software. As well we use one of the USB tuners on a laptop at the cabin. Very happy with them. Hauppauge has their own TV recorder software but I like the NextPVR better. It is free with donations accepted by those who are happy.

Don and Bruce

Thanks for giving me some direction.

Making decisions like this isn't as easy as during my 'first car' stereo choices. Then, it was 8 track or cassette. I chose cassette! Now, there are soooo many avenues to follow. The manufacturers all claim there's is the best. There's few options to get feedback about which system works 'best' for individual needs.

Having forums like this with real users is such a treat!

Time for reading

I am working on a teardrop cell phone connection thread. there are certain constraints antenna too close to signal booster etc. In this picture you can see the omnidirectional cell antenna and KingJack boosted TV antenna.

Here's how things worked out

I looked at TV receivers and didn't find good news for Mac.

I bought a 32" for $180 from Costco and resigned myself to having two monitors

A day and a half later I found a 32" Furrion tv on Offerup that's built for RV/boating. Apparently the construction is a bit more robust and the components are able to withstand temperature swings. I asked the guy what his bottom dollar was for the TV...$100

Fair enough!

I felt bad about returning the TV to Costco. I like the remote better on the Furrion. Picture isn't any different either
