Turn-assist fender lights

Postby StrongFeather » Fri Feb 08, 2019 10:47 pm

Calling all electrical geniuses out there looking for a challenge to solve a 1st-world problem that I can’t seem to solve myself.

All I want to do is install forward-facing lights on each fender that come on when their respective turn signals are used. A simple off-delay timer would hold the light on between blinks of the turn signal and shut it off a second or two after the turn signal turns off. Simple request, right? Here’s a poorly drawn schematic.

Problem 1:
Since the turn signals and brakes use the same wires, every time the brakes are applied, both fender lights would turn on.
Solution to problem 1:
Image
R1 and R2 prevent the off-delay timers from turning the fender lights on when the brakes are applied or the hazard flashers are used.

Problem 2:
If the brakes are used at the same time as either of the turn signals, the fender lights will turn off mid-turn and come back on if the brakes are released before the turn signal shuts off.

There are sequencing issues as well, e.g. brakes on before turn signal vs. turn signal on before brakes, etc...

Two things that I’m willing to add if necessary are a brake pedal signal as a third input and a second set of tail lights (one set for turn and one set for brake).

I work with relays and logic and I can’t seem to solve this puzzle. I’m hoping someone out there is smarter than me and likes a challenge as much as I do.

Trouble has it right. You need to convert form a 2 wire system that your TV used to a 3 wire system.

I am wiring one of these in today on my build for the third break light.

Awesome! I've heard about tail light converters here on TNTTT - I believe Todd mentioned it in another post - but I assumed that they were only for a 3rd brake light output, not 3 separate outputs. This should work perfectly! Simple and cheap. Thanks guys.

On the last couple teardrop builds of mine I put a turn signal LED light at the front side of the teardrop so other drivers can see my intensions, it works well & is a great safety feature.
It's wired into the brake/turn circuit, very easy to do if you think about it.
It comes in handy to see if the TD lights are working, by simply stepping on the brake and it lights up.

It's not on in this photo as the TD is not hooked up to the tow vehicle.
I have a switch in the cabin that I can turn on the clearance lights while in a rest area.
It lets others know it my be occupied.
I unplug the tow vehicle so we don't drain the TD's onboard batteries.
My fenders have amber LED's on the front and red LED's on the rear.

Thanks StrongFeather, I also have a LED third brake light on the galley lid.
LED's are directional so I make an aluminum bracket so the light is plumb.
