It is obviously a smaller 14g wire so too small to use to recharge the trailer battery.

Steve:

Is that 14 gauge wire on the truck side or the trailer side?

After closer inspection, the black wire from the trailer connection is larger than 14g, likely 10g which seems to be the standard. The trailer manufacturer spliced in a 14g wire to the inside of the trailer since they were only using it for the interior lights. I think I’ll disconnect the 14g wire and replace it with a 10g and use it to maintain/charge the trailer battery when driving and just connect the interior lights to the trailer battery. That should keep things simpler. Thanks for the input everyone.

If the singular goal is to have the lights work when unhitched, you could wire a vehicle-side connector directly to the trailer battery so that when you disconnect you would unplug the trailer-side cable from the truck and then immediately plug it into the one mounted on the trailer.
