Converter-Charger sizing vs batt AH

Postby fishboat » Sun May 19, 2019 11:12 am

From one, hard to find, hit I've found on the web, and nothing on tnttt that I've found so far, the rule of thumb for converter-charger sizing vs total batt amp-hrs appears to be 10%. That is, if you have 220AH total in batts (2 x 6v golf cart batts) then your charger should be about 22-amp.

Is this true?

I'm thinking 220 AH batts and a 30A charger..seem reasonable? If the charger is scaled up to say 45A is there any harm to the batts?

The charger would be a smart-4 stage unit.

thx..

Here's a good article on sizing battery chargers.

http://www.smartgauge.co.uk/chargesize.html

As in most thing having to do with batteries, the correct answer is "it depends".

Yah.."it depends" is often the best answer to nearly any question anyone can pose of about any topic.

That being said, good article.. I hadn't seen it. It puts things in perspective and highlights about the most common law right after "it depends"...that being.."everything is trade-off". To get something you want, you need to accept something you don't want.."faster, cheaper, better?".."pick two"

Looks like I'll be getting a little larger charger and accept a little less battery life.

thx..

My TD came with a WFCO 25 converter/charger - WAY under powered. You dont really run on the converter side of things, you use battery and recharge them when you get low. The WFCO has a fan for cooling the internals when the POWER DRAW - NOT the heat is at 6 amps - and it runs 20 minutes out of every hour.

I swapped mine out to a higher amp and better quality.

as they say YMMV but go with more capacity, it costs more to upgrade later.
