need help on Renogy suitcase kit with voyager controller

Postby davidreidok » Wed Oct 21, 2020 10:43 am

A few months ago, I purchased this unit from Renogy.

Me and Renogy Help desk have been swapping emails many times. The solution they give is the same every time but it never works.

My issue is I cannot get the battery type button on the controller to get up the screen that lets me select the type battery to charge (I have the standard RV battery I think called the flood type. When I hold down the battery type button all it brings up is a flashing 14.4 screen.

My question is has any of you all had issues getting to the battery type screen with this Renogy suitcase unit and if you have a solution.

Many thanks.

It looks like the voyager charge controller you just need to hold the button down again to get in to that setting.

If I ever bought a Renogy "kit", the first thing I would do is replace the cntroller with a better one, e.g. Victron SmartSolar.

Needs to be located right at the target bank, and allows for full user-custom adjustability, monitoring from smartphone, etc.

Of course even better if they just sold the panel part for a bit less without their crap controller

There you go, posting negative crap again. This guy isn't asking for criticism.

Could you please take a photo of your solar system in your build and share it?

I've got a Renogy Adventurer controller and it does a fine job for my needs.

And to second the opinion renogy makes some great controllers, they are one of the few that has lifepo4 chargers set up correctly for the most part. And as far as i know the only one in its cost range that allows you to do custom charge profiles. Sure there are ones that cost hundreds more but unless your living off solar 100% they make no sense. I do wish they would sell the brief case styles with mppt chargers, but they have to sell to a price point, and I would say I do wish they sold them with out chargers. Mostly for people to be able to just plug in a second panel to the same charge controller they have already for parallel panel systems.

I have the Renogy suitcase kit with a voyager controller. Two solar panels with stand.

The problem is the controller's battery type button does not give me the battery types when pressed it just flashes what looks like voltage 14.1

The Renology help desk keeps telling me to press the button that is their solution, but pressing the button does not work.

I think the solar panels work, am looking to just buy a controller from Amazon, not sure which one.

So far, Renogy help desk has not helped me solve my problem.

I have given up on Renogy help desk.

All they do (over and over) is ask me to push the button down, even asked for and got a video of me pushing the button.

Finally got a email saying they would warranty the controller.

They have done done that.

I will just buy a controller from Amazon.

Renogy may well sell good products. My experience with their support after the sale (I purchased direct from Renogy) has been terrible. Lesson learned.

Well after renogy I would say go victron. the mppt chargers do cost about 120 to 130 bucks but they are bluetooth so you can monitor how much power you have gotten from the charger plus set the charging profile on your phone.

In fact I need to purchase mine.

After months of swapping emails (please hold down the button and send us videos etc), Renogy as of 12/06/2020 has agreed to replace the entire kit. Have sent them the kit, will see what happens.

Renogy may have good solar kits (I have several camping buds who are happy with Renogy) but if my experience with the Renogy Help Desk is typical, if problems do occur, expect lots of emails and time spent to get a workable solution from them.

It's my belief that Renogy makes great products but has horrible support.

Yeah, there's disgruntled customer posts all over Reddit and Facebook. I've got a Renogy DC-DC converter but I won't buy anything else from them because of their support issues.

Use to be, they sell relatively OK panels but only by mass-consumer chinese-level standards

but at least they had "good" support available.

If that latter has now deteriorated, I reckon best to just avoid completely.
