LG 5K BTU Window unit tripping GFCI.

Postby dbhosttexas » Sun Sep 05, 2021 1:17 pm

Okay so I managed to grab a curb side discarded, somewhat recent LG 5K BTU Window unit. THe guy throwing it away simply said his wife hated the rust (not rust, dirt) in the vents after most of a summer of use.

I took it home plugged it in, and it threw the GFCI almost instantly.

IAssuming it isn't something as simple as a bad GFCI end, what else should I be looking for?

Check for corrosion where the cord attaches, but its probably the GFCI end.

On the exterior side of the unit, there was an odd amount of dirty / mud / dust and it got washed out with the fan spray on the garden hose. Nothing that wouldn't have been exposed to rain in normal usage though.

It had been raining when the neighbor threw it out, it is possible the GFCI end got soaked..

Trying to dry things out.

I had one gfci bad because it got a spiderweb in it. If the fan motor got wet it will do that until it dries out.

It did have a GFCI plug. I have a lot of gear that has GFCIs in the cord. So I keep a spare in my spares. I swapped it over, and still had tripping issues.

I pulled the new GFCI and tossed out the AC, got a new GE unit from Sams Club that I tested out and am quite pleased with so far. No real issues running it on a tiny generator. No problem with it cooling down a 10x14 tent so far, I see no issues with it keeping my truck camper once built, frosty and dry...
