ooh, fire! Here is a good post where my signature is appropriate.

no matches required

potassium permanganate + glycerin + about ten seconds

I have about 3 gallons of potassium permanganate powder free from someone who no longer needed it for his water filtration system. The glycerin is available in many pharmacies. Pour the liquid glycerin onto the pp powder and stand back. The fire is quick and hot hot hot hot hot (>1000 degrees.) Make sure to have the kindling on top.

According to the guys that write the Internet, I can use powdered sugar instead of glycerin for a less intense effect. But it requires adding a little water to start the reaction. But never premix the stuff because it could start a fire by getting damp. Just think...START a fire with water.

warning warning warning - I cannot find specifics on the sugar mixture, but I do find a lot of hits about making bombs when I search for it.

I've read that both these methods are used in survival kits. And the potassium permanganate can be used to sanitize water for drinking.

 I should have qualified my post a bit better... I haven't built one (yet) I just stumbled on the laser lighter video yesterday and thought it fit well with this thread.

When I was a kid, I wanted to light the gas grill. The igniter didn't work and I couldn't find matches anywhere. So, I made a small cup out of a piece of aluminum foil, put a chunk of Sterno in it, and put it on a paper plate in the microwave. Set the microwave for 3 seconds. The arcing lit the Sterno. I picked up the plate and dropped the burning Sterno into the gas grill and turned it on. And my desire for burgers was satisfied.

Fire starter...

Postby Buckeye » Mon Aug 17, 2009 6:25 pm

What I like to use is candle nubs (I get them from my church when they change the candles). Then, I use Cut Rite paper and wrap the candle nubs with it like a candy kiss.

They are easy to make, inexpensive and work GREAT!!! I store them in a coffee can with the plastic lid.

Fire starter...

Also, if you are staying somewhere for a little time and make breakfast using bacon, make the base for your fire and pour the bacon grease on the wood. If starts fast and is somewhat weatherproof.

About 50 seconds into video, you will find out how to start a fire with a condom.

Also contains other uses for a condom.

Backpackers' cooking fuel will light wet wood for a campfire in the rain or snow: Available in the sporting goods/camping department of most Target, WalMart and chain pharmacy stores.

You can light them in your fingers without getting burned if you put it down right after you see it start to flame a little. Takes about 20-30 seconds to get going full blast. And two tablets (about an inch in diameter) or one big tablet (inch and a half in diameter) will boil a quart of water in 3 minutes at 10,000 ft in the mountains.
