Yeah, the Steripen should do a good job on bacteria and viruses, but if you start off with bad tasting water, like we have here in the South, you'll end up with bad tasting safe water.

We use several water filters, depending on what we are doing. We mainly Base Camp with the trailer, so we use the Katadyn Expedition filter most often.
As other members have posted, we also use the Katadyn Pocket filter when we are backpacking and when doing an over night canoe trip, we use the Katadyn Base Camp filter. No mater which filter we use, we always follow up with the Micropur tablets to be sure the viruses are gone.

When i hike i carry a Pur Hiker filter. The best addition is a sill-nylon water bag. Using the bag, i collect water from a stream then hang the bag from a limb or picnic table or whatever. Then when i filter, i do not have to spend time hunched over a stream.

They are easy to make And the green one in this page looks just like mine.
