This is the single best thing in my galley.

You can still locate a few on e bay with a search for party ball or Ingrid party ball

6 plates 6 small plates 6 bowls 6 small cups 2 large serving bowls and a serving tray all in a soccer ball size orb made up of the 2 serving bowls.

Here is a current e bay listing with several great pictures of the set.Click Here

Jim, nothing personal, I mean I really have no idea if you are a panzie or not. I guess that is a sort of personal choice but if you want to take this opportunity to come out of the closet, thats fine with me.

I use a lot of fuel and I have seen white gas as high as $9.00 per gallon. The reason I use so much fuel is I light my off the grid fortified compond hidden in an undisclosed location in New Mexico with Colemen lanterns. I spend two weeks there every two months. I also engage in un-panzie like activities like hunting and flyfishing (slightly panzie like) which keeps me camping many weeks per year.

Honestly, you have to admit that fuel that can be had at any mini market or gas station is cheaper and more convienent. If one were just starting to accumulate equipment going all dual fuel would be the smart way to go. And by the way, since they are dual fuel you can use your Coleman fuel in them if you want but none of thhat panzie propane.

Real campers don't use propane or blue tarps.

I read some of the above notes, which mentioned 'sets' of pans....

This not all of what I take, but I'll add to it later:

One pot big enough for what you need. Mine is 2 qt, I think. This is also used to heat water, add soap, wash dishes (small sponge and small brush for fork tines).

one big plastic salad bowl. Used for anything/everything.. filled with cold water to rinse washed dishes from above.

One skillet.

One can opener.

Paper plates and bowls. When I use them, I use 4 or 5 stacked together, which makes it very sturdy. When done, I throw the top one away.

Utensils, couple of knife, fork, spoon. I use the real stuff, not plastic..

Tongs for flipping steaks and bacon.

Spatula

2 cup Pyrex cup for heating coffee water for instant coffee.. also used for mac and cheese and soups, and I eat out of the cup... no sense wasting paper plates/bowls.

plastic cutting board, not too big.

salt/pepper...

One very sharp butcher knife for cutting potatoes, meat, etc.

paper towels on holder in galley..

One or two hand towels.

electric fry pan... no stove

microwave oven for heating 'stuff' in its own container... less washing..

for lighting.. all led battery powered.. no propane or white gas containers to haul... and usually, I camp in warm weather when it gets dark later.. hardly use the lights.

I try to keep it really basic, but even this might be over kill to some...

I was thinking of these:

GSI Kitchen 23

Bugaboo Camper

Add add a cast iron pan, coffee press, knives, condiments and spices and that should be just about everything needed for a trip.

WoW- take a kid to Disneyland for a day and there are two full pages when I return- excellent… (imagine a Montgomery Burns finger tapping)
I knew this would generate a LOT of answers- which is what I wanted to see. I am going to look over these lists and find some of the themes and construct the definitive list   of minimalist must haves (yes there is some ironic incongruence to that statement)

Looks like Len and Jocko are real close
Arne does have a good minimalist list- lightweight too

don't forget that you need to be able to vary your gear a bit depending on your trip.

My absolute must have items are a cooler, ice and beer.

Other than that, it is just a focus on what you must have for food, shelter, warmth and safety.

I am working to winnow out the things I take on every campout, and keep them permanently in the TD. That way, all I need to pack at the last minute is perishables. Having my other stuff always in the TD keeps my from forgetting things.

My tongue box has all my chocks, ropes and powercords. My galley has my pans, utensils and plates/cups.

You can really get carried away and try to pack the house to go camping, but I like to keep it to a minimum. For example, I have one 10-inch skillet that I can cook nearly anything in. I also have a Weber Smokey Joe for grilling. If I need some other pan or pot for a special thing I am cooking for pot luck, I bring it on the campout alone.

If you have your regular stuff permanently packed, it makes leaving home and packing out so much easier. And, I developed my regular stuff stash by trial and error. I am still tweaking it after each trip.

BTW, by tweaking, I mean adding AND subtracting. I have ditched a few items over time, too.

For me, beer is a pick up along the way. I find American beer better, mostly due to the fact that the major breweries don't buy out every semi-interesting microbrewery down there. Now that I have said that it may not be safe for me here in Canada. I may be claiming refugee status on my next over the border run.

That being said, I don't drink much beer anymore and often just pick up a six pack of Genessee, Miller or something similary innocuous because it comes in cans. I still manage to bring some home.
