Scottish Midge Activity

Hi guys, I'm thinking of going another trip in the North West Highlands.

Have any of you been up there in the last few weeks? If you have, how would you rate the midge population? Where were you, and how long ago?

Last summer my wife was eaten alive while we were camping and she now has some sort of midge PTSD. Another bad mauling will probably see her give up camping for good. That has to be avoided.

We were up in Ullapool about four weeks ago and it was a midge-apocalypse due to the damp weather this year. I mean running screaming into the sea bad.

I was wondering if it has gotten any better in recent weeks?

Hi Slow, They are like a ferocious no-see-um. This link explains a bit about them.

Oh, my. I've been though many cycles of the biting gnats in the (American) Four Corners area in May & June, but these sound many, many magnitudes more awful.

We have the little biting gnats here in Florida too, but they have to work quick before the large mosquitoes drag us back to their camp. ;)
