Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers

Last month we took our teardrop on a 10 day trip from Maryland to Florida. The second night in Florida the mosquitos came out pretty bad and 3 of them accompanied us into the teardrop at bedtime. We had to spend some time chasing them around with a fly swatter before we could get to sleep.

I just happened to have a can of permethrin in the tonguebox so the next day I sprayed the teardrop curtains and bedspread with it. It is not only a repellant but actually kills them if they land on it. We had no more problems with mosquitos in the teardrop for the rest of the trip.

This is meant to be used on fabrics, not on skin, so do not spray it on yourself. You spray it on and let it dry. They say it will last through a couple of washings but I intend to retreat my linens after washing just to make sure.

Can you recommend a brand name, and where did you get it? I am allergic to mosquitoes...they affect me more than a brown recluse bite. I use Repel as a personal repellant (which I forgot last trip...thankfully no bug problems!).

Cost ~$5 at a local discount place (Ocean State Job Lot) and works great at ridding the TD of mosquitoes. Also makes a great Yankee Swap present...

I got it at Bass Pro and it is made by Sawyer, but I think you can buy it most anywhere.

I bet this would work if I put it on the carpet that is on my walls, here in Minnesota it seems the only way to keep them out is seal the tear in plastic bit that make sit very hard to use.

Thanks for the info. Bass Pro is way off of my normal route, so I will probably order it online.

Has anyone used one of these Thermacell mosquito repellants?
I have one which I not had chance to use yet. The reviews I have read were positive and a hunting friend of mine uses them when Spring Turkey hunting and likes it very much . When I try it, I will report back on it.

They have a belt and table top model. Coverage is supposed to be within 225 sf.

Thermacell works reasonably well, We've used them for 2 years...the problem with them is they don't work well in breezy conditions....only in still air. I will continue to use them, but I'm not sure I'd want to sleep with one.

The permethrin looks like an interesting solution...I'm a. Little concerned about toxicity to animals....

Mu brother and I have been using a Thermocell while Spring Turkey hunting. It seems to work well. I've sprayed my clothes with Repel for ticks and I've only seen one, but not latched into skin, but it didn't want to let go of my long johns!!

I am new here (no Teardrop yet) but I wanted to chime in on this. As long as it has a chance to dry it should be fine for the dog. I have actually sprayed a small hankerchief and after it dried, tied it around Pete and it really helps in the middle of summer here in KY when it gets bad buggy. I have also used it on my hammocks and we both sleep in there together. No issues. I got mine at a local sports store but REI, Sportman's warehouse and those type of places have them.

edit: I would not spray directly on dog or human, but I spray it on my clothes and his clothes (outside) and let dry. My dog is an 18 lb jack russell

I have been using Thermacell's for the past ten years while deer and turkey hunting on the Georgia coast and the South Carolina low country. They keep an area about 30 feet in diameter clear of mosquitos while they are running. I agree with Gerry that I would not run it in the Teardrop. I have had times when I was covered with them (25 or more). A few minutes after firing up the thermacell, there were none. They are not as effective in a breeze but the mosquitos are not as much of a problem in a breeze. I would not hunt or camp without one.

A couple of weeks ago I stopped in at Cabelas in PA and bought a large spray bottle of Sawyer permethrin. All the reports have been positive from what I have read. It will be several weeks before I get back into the outdoors and I will use it then. For me, I have to worry about ticks as did contact Lyme's disease about 18-19 years ago. I do not want it again. I am convinced some of my medical problems today can be traced back to then. But I also do not do well with Mosquitos either. I will give a report on the permethrin an how it does with both insects at the end of the month.

thermacell used memorial weekend. while others slap i relax hee! no chemical spray to skin i loved it
