I was looking up some info on solar heating and saw some info on solar cooking.
Has anyone heard of this? You can build cooking boxes that will cook food using only solar power. Check out this site:

My brother has made a homemade solor oven, he had a blast cooking out of it. He has made several dinners so far.

They work good. We built one for a scout project and one can really cook some good stuff.

I remember at least once when I was a kid, about 35 years ago my stay at home mom wouldn't have us eat a cold chicken lunch. She took some leftover drumsticks from the night before, cold from the fridge, put them between two aluminum pie plates and laid it in the back dash of the old blue Impala. It was sitting in the sun in the driveway.
About , oh, 30 minutes later she's calling us in for lunch.

When I told MY kids that story, they didn't get it. That was mom, resourceful smart thrifty... especially on 99* days with only a swamp cooler in the house! hahaha

I've known several "society dropouts" who have moved way up into the mountains to live in what I'd consider a near survival mode. Just for the sake of saving buying liquid fuel, or cutting solid, they often cook with solar. There are lots of ways to do it, and probably just as many sites on the internet showing how. Try it sometime, it works.

I have used a Sun Oven for years and have used it to cook anything you can make in an oven including baking bread, cookies, cornbread, brownies, rice, chicken, pork roast. I have had people come and knock on my door to ask what that thing is in my yard.

Solar ovens are great for third world countries, places where women search for hours for firewood to use for cooking. There are places like Haiti which have been virtually deforested. A solar oven may also be used to make water safe to drink which is also important in third world countries.

Solar ovens come in different sizes and designs and have been made for many years as a science project. They are not only green, they are fun to use. Winter or summer, all you need to make it work is sunshine.

a neighbor used to roll our her wheel barrow with a sun oven in it.. I never stopped to look at it, but it was out there just about every sunny day when the temp was over 60.

There is a small town in northern California, Taylersville, that has a town wide Solar Cookoff every year the weekend after July 4th. They cook everything from pizza to Turkey to pasta.

At school my classes have made solar cookers using cardboard pizza boxes. We've made cookies and brownies and the upper graders do an activity where they design a solar hot dog cooker for their science project. The kids can make 'em and cook in, so I'm sure most of you young at heart could also....or.... Are you smarter than a 5th grader??
