What capacity frame is best?

Is the 1175lb frame enough ar should I get the heavier capacity?

I happened to notice that the 1175 is on sale now.

Unless you are planning on doing some rock hopping off road, I think the 1175 is plenty. My current build is on the 1175.

The torsion box that I build (the teardrop) will keep the frame straight!!!

Andy, keep in mind that you really need some over capacity to keep from flattening the springs...this is especially true on a Td where the weight will always be there...with the 1175# frame you should try to keep the build down to around 800#s

I have a 1,200# tear sitting on a 1,800# h/f trailer... I think it is a perfect match.... M/J is right. I would not build a tear that was close in weight to the gross weight spec on a trailer...

That is why you see 2,000 pound torsion axles on 1,000 pound tears...

After a little more thought I think I would feel safer with a higher capacity trailer.

I seem to have the tendency to overbuild things and since I'm goin over the frame the floor will have a wood frame structure under it.

I bought the 1800# trailer. Sure, I'll probably come way under that weight, and could have been just fine with the 1175# trailer, but I just wanted to be sure. And this way, I'm kind of unrestricted (weight-wise) on what kind of mods I can do to it. Of course, I'm going to be restricted size-wise. There is only so much that you can cram into a TD and still have room to sleep.

The 1175 lb frame is plenty as long as your finished tear weighs less than 1175 lbs.

I used the 990 lb frame and am quite satisfied with it. My finished tear weighs 620 lbs.

Joseph...note the 50% overage in capacity rule of thumb in your build...620#s + 50% = 910#s...onna 990# capacity trailer that is
just right...an 1175# frame needs to come in at no more than 800#s of sprung weight....

If you buy your trailer at the right time and with the right coupon, you really won't spend much more for the 1800# model.
It lists for $400, goes on sale for $300, and a 20% off coupon brings it down to $240. That's what I paid.

I'm going to buy one of there trailers the next time they go on sale, has anyone upgraded the tire size to 14" and what rims did you find fit?
