BUMPERS

Postby KA » Wed Aug 02, 2006 9:27 pm

Hi All,
Are bumpers a good idea? If so, how do you plan for them in your design?
Thanks.

After I finish my galley, I hope to install the old bumper that came with the original trailer. Here's a photo of the bumper on the trailer before it was dismantled.

Here's a shot from last year of the new trailer under construction.

Kria, a lot of debate on the subject but for myself, I wouldn't be without one....I don't want my hatch to be the first to find that post/stump, I didn't notice to begin with...if you enter "bumper" in the search engine, you will get to read ALL of the previous discussions on the matter

After backing into a campsite marker, I'd say ya, they ar a prtty good idea.
The marker was set in pretty soft soil, so no visible damage to the tear or sign

I'm not sure how I would retro fit one, but take a look at the picts of the CampInn bumper. That the one I've seen that i like the best.

Hi Madjack, Paul, Norma, and Kevin,
Thanks for the info.
Madjack, I can't believe I forgot about the search button with all of my time spent browsing this forum. Maybe my chassis headache interfered with my eyeballs. Anyway, thanks for the tip. I'll search away.
Paul and Norma, glad you didn't damage your tear.
Kevin, cool pictures. Thanks for sharing. You are doing a beautiful job on the rebuild.
Kris :)

Hi DeeBee,
The bumper looks nice. Thanks for posting the pictures. How did you attach the bumper to your chassis? Is it bolted to something welded under the frame?

If it's a metal bumper you are wanting, this guy might be able to make up something that "tickles your fancy"...

Yep... good "spotting", I missed that.

Here's another Vancouver bumper guy... > http://www.brizbumpers.com/index.html

I'm no expert, but it seems that to access the galley and such AND keep your shins intact, that a "swing-down" bumper might be the ticket; held in the upright position when driving by T handle "aircraft pins" / pull-pins or the like, but kept in the down position when in camp? It could be made removable with a sort-of receiver set-up, too, but I just migrated to the swing-down when I was brainstorming.... (OK, not a storm in my case; more like a shower or drizzle)

I plan to make a wooden bumper from a 2x6, and attach it to the trailer frame using the stake pocket brackets that came with it. The theory is that if the bumper gets a good whack, the brackets will bend and/or partially collapse, absorbing a lot of the impact. Then I can remove them and replace them with new brackets (the trailer came with 8 brackets, I think). Do you guys think that would work?

Hi Kris

The bottom bumper is bolted to the frame of the metal trailer. The two upper bumpers are bolted to the wooden frame that forms a deck. This deck is bolted to the frame and the walls are bolted to the the sides of the deck. The Zephyr is build a little differently in that is has a full 2x4 framed deck under it.

Thanks so much Dee Bee, Kurt, and Sam I Am. :) I'm getting there with my processing and planning. You are really helpful. I could not figure this stuff out without the experience and generosity found in this forum.
