North South bike rack

Postby rmcelroy » Wed Aug 23, 2006 1:23 pm

I've been kicking around the idea of mounting a bike rack along the length of the trailer tounge. I have quick release wheels and thought a car top (thule type) mount system on the tounge would be OK.

I havn't been around these types of mounts so I need to ask if anyone has to enlighten me on the ins and outs of these racks. The tounge on my trailer is quiet long, but I havn't measured to be sure it will even fit-just throwing out feelers here.

Thanks
Mc

You might give this some thought. I made a front kayak rack on mine. I bought a step bumper reciever hitch and mounted it upside down on the tounge with u bolt's Then I used a reciever kayak rack and a cargo carrier.
You could just use a reciever bike carrier. And it's easily removeable.

I bought a bike rack that slips over a extra long ball mount. I am sure it would slip over a tongue if you removed the hitch first. But then it would not come off.

The Thule would probally work, but I might have a cheaper way!

It would hold the front fork and just bungee the back or a little rachet strap. I do it this way on the top of the trailer I pull behind my motorcycle. You can find them at any bicycle shop

You can use one of those mounts, then fix a spot for the back tire to mount. Most racks use a strap to hold the bottom of the back tire to the rack. Any strap with a buckle would work.

Wow my estimate of how long the tounge is or how short the bike is was off. It looks like I'll have to go east west with a rack, even at that the bike will stick out on both side of the trailer. I may just go with a trunk mount.

Thanks for the info guys

Okay here is what you do then. Use the same setup as Sonetpro and then just use the same mount and mount it to the side of the basket. This way you have a bicycle holder for 2 bicycles and the handy basket also. I also use one of these baskets for the bicycles and then deer hunting.
