Axle Calcs- Is My Math Right?

Postby bdosborn » Sat Oct 14, 2006 5:20 pm

So I want the outside face of my wheels to be 78" apart. Its 4" from the outside of the wheel I want to use to the hub face. I want to use a flexiride axle.

So the hub faces need to be:
78"-4"-4"=70" apart.

The spring perches should be
70"-6.5"-6.5"=57"

So my frame can be 57" wide at the outside of the rails. Is this right?
Thanks,
Bruce

Yep again. Or very close.

The Flexiride (1,400-2,000lb axle) overhang limits are 6.12" min, 10.25" max.

So your maximum width over mounting brackets is 70"-6.12"-6.12"=57.75"

And the minimum width over mounting brackets is 70"-10.25"-10.25"=49.50"

The offset from the hubface to the inside of the suspension arm is approximately 5.5":

So if you want to make your body wider than 70"-5.5"-5.5"=59" you will need to make recesses in the body side for the suspension arm to move into on full bump.

I have taken this dimension from a Flexiride drawing, but I think someone has measured it on an axle, so I hope they'll chip in if this needs correcting.

Okay, when it comes time to order the axle I'll get 70" hub to hub and 56" between spring perches. I noticed on the web site that they only offered even sizes for the spring perch distances. I'll find out more when I call them and order it.
Thanks,
Bruce

Cool. Here's what I'm going to ask for then:
70" hub to hub
57.75" perch to perch
3500# axle with 2500# worth of rubber
5 on 4.5" wheel studs
electric brakes

I need to finish that shed first before I can order it though...

Be sure to specify Fedex ground shipment when you call them. I got hit with a $70 freight bill (conway) when I ordered an axle from them.
