Know Any Good Welders in Austin Area?

Postby lanego » Fri Dec 15, 2006 6:12 pm

Does anyone know of a place I can go to for a welded frame or chassis here in the Austin Area. I would travel a bit for an honest craftsman that is affordable. :worship: I saw a thread about finding one in Indiana (can't locate it now) but that's a bit far.

Also, can anyone tell me what to expect the cost to be? I just know they'll see me coming. :?

I had a buddy weld mine up, I don't know how much he charges though. I basically did everything except for the actual welding. I got the axle, bought the steel, cut the miters, etc. He welds roll cages for 4X4s so odds are, the welds are strong. This is his website: http://www.jkcustoms.com

I bought my steel from Westbrook Metals, behind Highland Mall. Their prices are a little on the high side but they will cut the steel for $5, as many cuts as youu need. It's pretty hard bringing home a 22ft piece of steel in your pickup. http://www.metals4u.com/

I bought my axle in San Antonio from http://swgooseneck.com because I thought they wouldn't charge me shipping since they are a dexter dealer. You can get Dexter Axles from Stone's Trailers over on I-35 near 1325 (or 45, or Louis Henna, or whatever it's called). I actually talked to them first, they will put in a custom order into Dexter, the price was the same as the place I bought mine from. http://www.stonestrailers.com

Lanego...just arm your self with as much information as you can prior to going in and talking to them...ask specific questions and give specific info regarding the material to be used...If they see you might know what you are talking about, they possibly won't gouge you. Can't hurt...Doug

Thanks, Asianflavva, for the local dealer links. I work next door to Highland Mall, so I can go to Westbrook over lunch to check it out. I see JK Customs advertises for small jobs on their website; I'll call tomorrow to see.

Doug, so right, try to look like you know what your talking about and don't say too much! :MLAS

Anyone else have any suggestions?
