Shocks

Postby Atomic77 » Fri Oct 03, 2014 11:16 am

Now that I've got my trailer built, I'm noticing some people have shocks on their trailer and some don't. What's your opinions on this topic? Thanks!

My understanding is that torsion axles have a natural dampening effect and don't really need shocks for a typical TD application. Most road going trailers in our weight categories will also not need shocks for typical road conditions.

I went with them because I have large tires on a heavy axle with underrated springs, and I plan on towing many miles off road in potentially rugged conditions.

Mine will be a Standie... I've got a 3500# axle with 1750 # leaf springs. Not sure if I need shocks or not.

Neither my 2200 lb standie nor my 1000 lb teardrop have shocks. I just towed the standie 4400 miles through the Canadian Rockies, Rocky Mountains, and Grand Teton mountains and felt no need for shocks. None of my towing is off road. I would think (no experience) that shocks would be helpful when towing off-road.

I've always thought shocks would help with a smoother tow, especially on California's broken freeways. We might as well be off road out here.

Whether I'm willing to spend an afternoon under my trailer with the sparks and slag of my mig welder is quite another question.

I've had two teardrops, both with torsion axles –no shocks. The current one has radial tires. It rides like a dream. I can't compare 'em side by side. Different weights, but I think the radials help.
