3-Axis Hitches ?

Postby Lvisman96 » Mon Jan 25, 2016 1:29 pm

Hello all ~

Because the wife and I tend to go extreme offroading, I'm trying to build a tough tear that can withstand the stresses we'd put on it. So, I'm looking at ready-made offroad trailers to get some ideas and I came across an Xventure off road trailer; it has a hitch that can rotate 360 degrees. Has anyone come across an aftermarket 3x-axis hitch that can be incorporated into a HF 4x8 or NT 5x8 frame ? Thanks all ~D

They're out there. The topic shows up frequently on the Off Construction Secrets forum here on the board.

I designed and built my own.

Maybe not something most builders would do themselves, but I like to design and build stuff, and have the resources to make it happen, so, why not? If you're interested, you can read about my decision to build it and how I did it starting in my TPCE build here.

Meant to add, if I were to do it over again I would look at prefab trailer spindles and adapt from there, rather than machining a custom spindle.

I've got a friend that has a hitch like that and I've helped him hook it up. I found it significantly harder to hitch up since the vehicle has to be precisely aligned to the trailer to connect. He uses it to solo hunt out of and I have no idea how he hitches alone. Perhaps there a trick that I'm not aware of.

Do a Google search for 3 axis trailer coupler and you will find one that a guy built from parts from Tractor Supply using 3 point hitch parts.. He even give a parts list. I hope this helps. Says he built it for under $50.00.

I believe the most common are
Lock & Roll
Max Coupler

Both have some deficiencies besides price, in particular backing up. Read the reviews. Both have variants on how to be mounted on the trailer -- welded/screws removable/adjustable receivers. They use a standard receiver on the TV side.

To some extend, a Pintle coupler has more range of motion than a standard ball hitch. Obviously not 360 and has other issues.

Actually, these hitches should be easier to uncouple from/couple to as there are not too many positions or angles between the TV and trailer that cannot be accommodated.

AT Trailers builds one of the best US made off road tears http://adventuretrailers.com/
There is or was a website that compared off road hitches and there were quite a number of them.
