First Trailer Issue

Postby dakippen » Tue Jan 24, 2017 8:42 am

So, I just ordered the Ironton Heavy-Duty Trailer Kit — 5ft. x 8ft. from Northern Tool, and the first thing hubby notices is the max 45mph which I completely missed and still can't find. How big of an issue is this and would swapping out to a 14" tire solve this problem?

What's the speed rating on the tire's ? What size are the stock tire's. It's possible it's the wheel bearings rating. And it's possible a lawyer said tag it 45 to protect the manufacturer.

There have been numerous posts on this issue on this forum and the consensus is that the 45 mph warning is simply legal posturing by the manufacturers. Many people have run their stock NT and HF 12" tires for thousands of miles at highway speeds with no problems. I have personally run my NT and HF trailers for many years and many times fully loaded at 65 mph. The only tire problems I have ever had is the normal cracking from age and exposure. Most people simply ignore.

Thank you Les! I thought I saw that somewhere when combing through the threads, but couldn't find where I originally found it.

The common precaution I've read here and elsewhere is to clean and then repack the bearings, and check them occasionally. The original grease has been reported as low quality and skimpy.

The warning is buried in the manual and, on my recently purchased Ironton 5x8, printed on the wheels.

+1 on repacking the wheel bearings before putting a new trailer in service. I use Red and Tacky because it seems to be the favorite among boat trailer folks.

Actually what is shipped is usually a cosmoline rust preventative that looks like grease. By all means clean and repack the bearings with a good high quality grease.

I built my teardrop using a Northern Tool trailer. I've used the same tires from Northern on my boat trailer for 17 years. I replace them when they start to weather check. Never had a problem. Same with bearings. I use marine wheel bearing grease. Never an issue. And I do drive 5 over the limit most all the time! Keep tires and bearing grease in good order, you'll never have a problem.
