5x8 Chassis Tutorial/Guide/Howto?

In a few weeks I'm going to begin building a 5x8 frame for Julie (oklahomajewel). I've been thinking about turning this project into a How-To for the home-builder that needs a frame made to order. I'd basically cover everything but the actual welding using basic tools (Chopsaw and Angle Grinder).

Is there any interest for a guide like this? I'm up for writing it.

I think that there would be plenty of interest from this crowd. Lots of us have built a teardrop, but not our own frame.

I think that would be a great idea. I wouldnt mind seeing one for electrical systems as well.

This would be a free guide. Outside frame Dimensions are 58"x96". Perfect for the generic benroy. I've learned quite a few things when it comes to keeping something big square, and It'd only be fair to share the wealth

Be sure to include a section on grinding off crappy welds!!!

JuneauDave....that is the most important thing about welding...after you wield a grinder for hours on end...you'll make sure you get your welding technique down from the get go....just part of the learning curve...the guy I learned from said "you weld it, you grind it" I decided I needed to learn to weld better.... good for you Julie...going to get one going!!!: Doug

I've been sitting here writing the basics out and what tools you need, Basically comes down to, Buy a good angle grinder, You'll be using it... Alot.

Looks like I'll have something to show by the weekend. Will be picture-less, but usable/reviewable.

Few details/changes to take note of.

1. I will be using a dexter #8 torsion axle

2. Most likely 13" wheels

3. The axle will be adjustable from 36-30" from the rear of the trailer.

4. I will be using an A-frame tongue with an Atwood coupler

5. The frame will be tacked together, then welded solid.

6. The main frame is 2x2x1/4" Angle with 2 crossmembers, allowing plenty of room for a footwell or storage bin.

All of this while I still need to completly restart on my own trailer.
