Northern Tool 4x8 Steel & Aluminum No Longer Available

Postby 221B » Sat Apr 28, 2018 8:03 am

We were all set to order either the 4x8 steel or aluminum trailer, and get started on our build, when we discovered that both are "No Longer Available" from Northern Tool.

With the recent loss of first the Red Trailer, then the Harbor Freight trailers, (specifically the 4x8 versions), we are at a loss as to where we can go next to purchase one.

We are curious as to other vendors that anyone might be able to point us to at this point?
Thanks!

Ditto on the 5x8s

Yeah, it looks like all the 4x8 & 5x8 (steel & alum) are no longer available. Those building the 1400+ pound teardrops will probably not miss the light weight kits, but for anyone aiming at the 500-700# target for 4 cyl towing (like me) are at loss.  Did the HF tire recall scare away marketers??

Holy smokes did I ever get lucky! I just bought a 5x8 aluminum trailer from Northern Tool just 6 weeks ago after being unable to get the 4x8 harbor freight trailer that I originally designed my trailer around. I am happy with that change because the trailer I did buy is well worth the additional cost for better quality and lower weight - as well as giving me 8 sqft more to create a better floor plan. But dang - I didn't realize that I was grabbing the last of them! If that is the case. Phew.
I hope they start selling them again.

When did Red Trailers disappear? I was looking at their site only a few months ago it seems.

We are definitely at a loss, since we are among those shooting for a sub 1000# setup.

It seems like they disappeared almost a year ago, if I remember correctly. I don't think I ever heard the reason why, though. Maybe the same reason as the Harbor Freight trailers.

The Northern web page also says the smaller 40" x 48" is not available.

It's a shame. The whole trailer kits were a real bargain compared to the separate parts.

Axle, springs, hubs, bearings, wheels, lug nuts, tires, frame, tongue, coupler, chains, lights, nuts and bolts and most parts were protected from corrosion.

Wow. That's going to but a crimp in a lot of builds.

I think we may have to look harder at getting scratch built trailers registered.

Blains farm and fleet has a 4x8 that seems pretty similar to the HF and NT.

The Northern Tool steel 5' x 8' trailer kit and the NT aluminum 5' x 8' trailer kit are no longer offered for sale.

A couple years ago I got a great deal, I paid just $399.99, for a NT 5' x 8' steel trailer kit. It was on sale for $449.99 including free shipping. I used a Retail Me Not $50 off coupon that lowered my cost to $399.99 delivered to my home.

I wonder if the recent imposition of higher tariffs against Chinese goods is (partially) responsible for the disappearance?

Thanks for the tip!
I checked out their website and couldn't locate any. Could it be a local store type of offering?
Anyway, we'll continue on with the hunt; and any other ideas would be most appreciated!

Although my build won't be starting for another 6 months or so, I went ahead and bought an NT 5x8 trailer kit last month. I used the excuse that with the announced tariffs on steel that the price would be increasing significantly, but I never thought they would take them off the market.

This will put a crimp in many build plans.

From what I understand HF Trailers and NT Trailers are built by the same factory. I had assumed that once HF trailers were no longer available NT would follow.
