2200# torsion axle for 9x5 teardrop?

Postby nrhmaine » Fri May 15, 2020 8:14 am

Hey folks,
We got a Starcraft popup for a $200, and we're turning it into a teardrop chassis. Tore off the top, cut the wings off the frame as well as the back 18" or so, and planning to move the axle forward 5 inches (currently at 30% of body length).
My question is, for a 5x9' moderately equipped teardrop, is the #2200 dexter torsion axle going to work okay, or will it be too stiff? I've seen folks saying that with torsion axles, loading 50% of capacity and up gives a decent ride, and it looks like a reasonable weight for something this size is about #1500, so I figure this should be pretty good. Can folks confirm that, or set me straight?

Also, I'm inclined to move the axle now, before we start building the camper. Seems that I can get it reasonably close to the right spot, and it'll be a lot easier to run this frame to the welder now, and then paint it up, instead of doing that stuff with the teardrop already on it (or removing the teardrop, which seems like a risky proposition).

The way the frame members are laid out, it'll be simplest to weld on new dexter axle mounts at 35% from the back (the box of the frame is 111", new spindle center at 39").
Thanks for the advice!

I have always used Dexter Torflex torsion axles. I spec them for the loaded weight of the trailer plus 100 pounds. Here's what I order:

#9 Dexter Torflex axle, downrated to 1600 pounds
• Start Angle: 22.5” down
• Trailer width: 59.5”
• Hub face: 74”
• Hub diameter: 6.5”
• Bolt Pattern: 5 on 4-1/2” with standard studs
• Lubrication: EZ Lube
• Electric Brakes: Yes

The trailers love with them.

Since I already have a 2200# torsion axle in good shape, I'm wondering if the ride would be okay with that one. If our teardrop ends up being about 1500#, would a 2200# axle ride right? Anyone have experience or opinions with an axle about that size?

Thanks,
Nate

I'd use it. Just make sure you use radial tires and not trailer tires.

Tony,
Why do you say go with Radial Tires rather then the Trailer Tires? Is it for a softer ride or some other reason?
Thanks,
John

Trailers tires are made with stiffer sidewalls so they can handle the stress put on them from a double axle system in a tight turn. They don't track.

Radial tires have a much better ride.
