Galvanized Tractor Supply 4x8 w/ Free Shipping

Postby 221B » Mon Mar 22, 2021 8:14 am

Our local Harbor Freight stores have been backordered on their 4x8 trailers for a long time now, (we're in Maine), so we've been looking for alternatives that won't cost an arm and a leg for shipping.
We just discovered that Tractor Supply has a new 4x8 model by Stirling with a free shipping offer to your local Tractor Supply. Just recently, it would have cost us several hundred $$$ just to get the unit shipped, so this seems to be good news.
The other interesting thing about this trailer is it is GALVANIZED, which is also a huge plus here in the land of salt-and-calcium-chloride-soaked winter roads! It also has a 5-bolt pattern on the hubs, but is limited to 1000lb payload. This won't be a problem for us, since our build should come in under that, including gear.

Anyone have any insight on this particular model, and it's suitability for our application?

Thanks!

I have been able to find the hf trailers by calling weekly, the never know what is coming. That trailer looks expensive for what it is. Also eight inch wheels are out for me.

It appears to be at least as suitable for a build as any other boxed trailer kit. The product info indicates the tire size is 4.80x8 but the photo does appear to show 5-lug wheels.

You may not have noticed, but in the Q&A at the bottom of the page a company rep answered a question about the tires: "Carlisle Sport trailer tires have a maximum speed rating of 62 mph"

I looked through pdf and find it more detailed and useful than NT instructions. Also liked accessories like 12" wheels and fenders, tongue extension, etc., presumably well suited to trailer and galvanized. Too bad no 5*8 or 5*longer.

Yes, and I also like (1) the tongue jack is centered not offset to one of the tongue arms, and (2) the axle is on top of the leaf springs, offering a lower bed height. Let's hope they add a 5x8 to the line up!

I have never seen the Sterling trailer but I did some research. The Sterling trailer is made in Canada by Westbrook (http://www.westbrooktrailerparts.com). Versions of the trailer kit are sold by the US Home Depot and the Canada Home Depot (http://www.homedepot.ca). The Canadian Home Depot site has the best reviews. I decided against the trailer kit because the bed 7/8" larger than 4' x 8'. Another review said the bolt holes to mount the 4x8 plywood close to edge of the plywood.

Yes, they seem to find out what they are getting on the day the supply trucks arrive. I left my name with the manager at Harbor Freight, and he said that he would call us when the 4x8 versions come in.

Also, I called Westbrook Trailers, and they have 12" wheels along with the larger fenders that can be ordered, because I agree about the 8" wheels.
The cost they quoted me is as follows (plus shipping)…

504114 - 4.80 x 12 LRC Tire - $94.00/each - Extended Cost = $188.00
504212 - 8 x 12" Fender - $32.50/each - Extended Cost = $65.00

Thanks for the link to the Canadian Home Depot site with the Q&A info. Marathon Trailers seem to be keeping track and responding to the questions.
I suppose it's a currency differential thing, but the trailer is available for $599 from Tractor Supply in the US with "free shipping", rather than the $849 listed on the Canadian Home Depot site?
After adding the cost of the 12" tires, though, the cost is about $800. I read that it might be possible to simply move the existing fenders higher in order to accommodate the larger wheels.

I think I've seen skateboards with bigger tires... You could drop one in a chuckhole and never see it again.

I am endlessly inspired by people trying to fix everything themselves and succeed. Unfortunately, it is not given to me to be such a master, and I pay for my machines to be repaired by specialists. I recently ordered compact tractors https://www.machinerydealer.co.uk/compact-tractors-for-sale/, and I hope that this time I won't break everything in the first month of use. I don't know what the problem is; apparently, I'm just incompatible with technology and agriculture, but I don't stop trying.

Just tossing it out there, the NT 5x8 is $549 12" wheels and rated for 1700lb.
Although I ordered mine through Amazon with $150 shipping, NT wanted nearly $500.
I'll be done when I'm finished, if that's not fast enough, take a number.

I purchased this trailer for a solo foamie last spring. I've upgraded the wheels with 12" radials from recstuff.com ($232). The trailer is similar to the Northern Tool bolt together trailers but lighter. I'm generally impressed with the design and quality except the following.

One concern I have is at the point where the tongue meets the trailer frame there is a large hole machined into the tongue member on both tongue members. I am not impressed with the location of this hole since it only serves as a point for a rubber grommet to be placed and wires run through. It is not a big enough concern to make me feel it will be a problem but it is a stupid place to locate this hole considering there are two bolt holes above and below on the same piece. I contacted the manufacturer in Ontario and their response was they will forward the photo to their engineers.

The hole I refer to. The tongue is the nearest left to the farthest right frame member. The other frame member is the front cross member on the "box" frame.
