12" wheel options, don't want white wagon wheels. Help!

Postby Bucko6 » Fri Mar 03, 2006 8:37 pm

Thanks again to all who contribute to this site!

I am now nearing the final stages of my first build. The trailer I started from has 8" wheels with a 4 bolt pattern with no offset. I planned on finding some nice 12" wheels to bolt on. My first choice was to buy some standard steel wheels and add on baby moon caps. I have searched hi and low for any 12" wheel and all I find are the wagon style wheels either white or galvonized, neither of which will accept wheel covers or hub caps.

I did find baby moon caps I can put on my 8" wheels, but I really want a taller profile for all the obvious reasons. Does anyone know of a source for nice 12" wheels? I was told I cannot go bigger than 12" because the larger size wheels would cause interference between the tire and the frame. I only have about 1" clearance now. Would any 13" wheels work?

I am just looking for ideas and/or suggestions. Thanks all in advance for your help!

Buck,,, early 70's gm cars,, ie vega and sunfire have a 4 bolt pattern that should fit ,, however,, the off set may be all wrong,, these tires are 14"and may cause a real problem being too close ,, spacers might be a solution if they are not too thick or you may need to lengthen your axle,,,

good luck finding the right rim

chipper

I was going to suggest 13" wheels with a low profile tire. Interference problems? You might think about some wheel spacers. You can get 13 inchers all day long at your local wreaking yard. Just need to find the right hole pattern. (re. Honda, Toyota to name a couple)

Have a good day.

What is the recommended wheel size for your teardrops? I think I've seen just about everything being used.

I've dressed up the wagon wheel look before by shooting the rim black and another color on the centers...some chrome lugs and center cap and they were pretty presentable...just an idea...Doug

Hello Buck
I have purchased 12inch wagon wheel in chrome from www.tredit.com they are in Indiana. They had them as 4 lug wheels.
I checked the web site and it is down now, try them later.

You may be able to go to a 13" wheel/tire combo. You should take your teardrop to a wheel and tire store. They should be able to measure clearances and find a wheel with the proper backspacing. If you go with a common size tire you can find a replacement in almose any small town.

Northentool.com has all sorts of 12" wheels that are solid...not wagon wheel design. Here's an example: http://www.northerntool.com/webapp/wcs/ ... 2104_22104
