Trailer jack on HF trailer 'V' tongue

Postby EZ » Sun Apr 09, 2006 10:44 am

Since the V-shaped tongue on the HF trailer forces the jack installation on one side or the other, has anyone had a problem with this? Seems there might be a lot of twisting force on the tongue. Might be a little stronger after the tongue box is installed but not much. I have seen some with 2 jacks also.

Ed, I had to mount my jack to a piece of angle and it did twist. This is what I did.

Mine leans a little. Last weekend I saw another type fix that Hap did on his HF trailer he has a small piece of landscape timber bolted across the V of the tounge. Wish I had taken a picture of that it's an easy quick fix.

Here's another solution. The layers are 4 in number, 2 to an a-frame shape and 2 to the jack triangle shape. Being made of ½" plywood it rises 2". There also has been 2" removed from the bottom of jack tube to get proper clearance.

I see that Jim Marshall used 2 jacks on his really beautiful teardrop. At $20.00 minus 20% at Harbor Freight that's another $16.00. I think I can lay that out.

I will also see if the 1/2" plywood platform that my tongue box will sit on will strengthen it up a bit. Might act well in torsion with the cheap strap on the bottom of the tongue.

You could put a couple of the leveling jacks on the corners of the tear and just us the jack to raise and lower it from your tow vehicle, or to move around some before final setup.

No, but I have a very light tongue weight - I can pick it up and push it around like a wheelbarrow.

Very nice way to mount the tongue jack... you've raised the bar another notch... Good job...

I really like Old Timer's solution.

I am building on a HF frame and do NOT like the way the jack sits off to the side. I really like the look of the "Point-of-the-V" jacks, but the HF tongue just isn't right for that.

Gee, wiz, adding some wood parts!?!? It's so rediculously simple, but I never thought of it

I am definately doing my jack like this.
still no idea what i'm doing...

Its not very hard to convert the hitch on a HF trailer to the one you want. There's a thread on it around here somewhere. You will need your ball mount 2" lower if you do it. I think Kerry has a nice post regarding the swap.

Here's my version. Not as purty as the wood one though.
