Flat 4-prong on Vehicle to 7-prong on Teardrop

Postby Tear Fan » Thu May 11, 2006 7:38 am

Hey, Y'all.

I am sure this has been addressed but I cannot find it on-site. Help!

I have a 1988 Bronco II which I will use in three weeks (Yay!) to pull our new Silver Shadow 5 X 8 Teardrop. (Yay again!) To the point, the Bronco has a towing bumper - just add 2" ball - and a 4-prong flat plug. Ace Hardware offers a 4-to-7 adapter for $10. Is this gonna work. Anybody run into this before?

Tear Fan,, I used one of the flat(car) to 7pin round (trailer) adaptors a while back,,, after tracing wires and jerry rigging it worked,, seemed the ground was not making contact thru the 7 pin plug,,, so we ran a seperate ground wire from the car frame to the trailer frame and it worked just fine,, dont know if it was a defective plug or something in the wires but we got it working,,

@ Chip and TRAIL-OF-TEARS: Thank you both so much for that info. I am excited not only about the new purchase, but by the availability of the support needed by us newbies! Many thanks also to the web managers.

@ Chip - I am about 60 miles due north of Atlanta. (And that is probably not far enough . . . lol) I am 15 miles south of Blue Ridge, Georgia. It was a little nowhere town when I moved here 13 years ago, but has grown considerably.

I am off to Ireland for a week with my mom, then in mid-June will be going to North Canton, Ohio to pick up our new Silver Shadow. Some time after that let's hook up and go!!!

Love to correspond off site if'n you want. I will send you a private message with my e-mail address if acceptable. ?

Tear Fan,

I just got a kit to put in my Toyota PU. It was really simple and might be just as easy an option as using the adapter. Just get the 4wire kit made for your vechicle and it only takes about 20 or 30 minutes to attach it through your taillights.

I have a Cubby that I built last sping.

The wiring kit that I got, I think that I got it at Wal-Mart but, it may have been at one of the autoparts stores around here. Anyway it is made so that you can just take the taillights apart and unplug them, then plug the kt harness into where the taillights were plugged and then plug the taillights into the other end of the harness. Put the taillights back together and you are done!! I will see if I can find a link to a website for you.

Try this: Wiring Kit

Here's another one: Wiring Kit 2

Just google search on 'trailer hitches' or 'trailer wiring' or something like that!

I did just the reverse.....my truck is a 7 wire and my trailer is a four. I bought the Wally World adapter and it works just fine.

Again, thank you all so much for the info. Ready now to tow that baby home, camping along the way. Hope to meet all y'all soon. (That's the plural of y'all, in case you are ever quizzed. Know, too, that you cannot order one grit!) Have a good 'un, and we'll see you up and down the roads.

Don't forget where you are picking up the Silver Shadow. They are a trailer/camper facility and will have whay you need.
